TRANSFER SPECULATION

The Ed looks at possible signings for Gary Johnson this summer

It’s transfer speculation time again, as I take a turn to delve into a selection of players who could make the move to Plainmoor and bolster the squad for 2022-23:

LOUIS BRITTON

Louis Britton is a player who’s been on Bristol City’s books for a number of years and despite some excellent goal-scoring exploits in their youth ranks, has never made proper inroads into the first team, making his only Championship appearance in the 2020-21 season (a season which he started on loan at Plainmoor). He spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Woking, and then League of Ireland Waterford, scoring 7 goals in 14 games for the latter. Louis is still only a youthful 21 and certainly knows where the goal is – whether that’s enough to interest Gary Johnson is another thing entirely.

Date of Birth: 17/3/01 – Height: 1.92 – Place of Birth: Bristol – 21/22: Ireland League 1/NL, Played 19, Goals 7, Yellow/Red Cards 3/0

TONY LEE

It was reported recently that the Gulls had made a bid for prolific Poole Town striker Tony Lee, a bid that had apparently been rejected. Quite surprising news, considering United rarely pay anything for players! The 26 year-old striker had previously been at Eastleigh (amongst a number of other teams!), and has been a revelation at Poole, scoring a fantastic 36 goals in 37 games in 2021-22. Sure there was 10 penalties amongst the 36 and this was the Southern League, but his performances have clearly impressed the Johnson brothers. Will the Gulls go back in for Lee to ensure he’s in our squad for 2022-23? Time will tell.

Date of Birth: 1/1/96 – Height: Unknown – Place of Birth: Unknown – 21/22: Southern League, Played 37, Goals 36, Yellow/Red Cards 13/0

NATHAN CARLYLE

Young centre back Nathan Carlyle is on a contract at QPR, but could possibly become the latest loan player to arrive at Torquay United. The defender spent the end of 21-22 at Weymouth FC, and impressed as the Terras headed towards an inevitable relegation. Of course we’d love to see Duke-McKenna and/or Sinclair Armstrong come back to Plainmoor, but even if they don’t arrive, hopefully the link up with Rangers continues to benefit Gary Johnson. Maybe Carlyle could help us cope without Joe Lewis, if that time arrives.

Date of Birth: 19/12/00 – Height: 1.86m – Place of Birth: Republic of Ireland – 21/22: NL, Played 6, Goals 1, Yellow/Red Cards 1/0

NIGEL ATANGANA

Nigel Atangana was released by Exeter City this summer after 3 years with the Grecians. The French midfielder played under Gary Johnson at Cheltenham Town before that, and considering GJ’s previous ex-Cheltenham captures (Kalala, Wright and Holman), ‘making plans for Nigel’ would not be a surprise in 2022. After a season spent mainly on the bench in League 2, Atangana will be keen to find a regular first team place for his next move.

Date of Birth: 9/9/89 – Height: 1.87m – Place of Birth: Corbeil-Essonnes – 21/22: League 2, Played 16, Goals 1, Yellow/Red Cards 5/1

MITCH WALKER

Mitch Walker has recently been released by Aldershot Town after 3 years with the club, having spent the end of last season on the side-lines. The goalkeeper is certainly experienced at National League level and was a popular figure at Shots, playing nearly 100 times for the club. With Shaun MacDonald mulling over a contract offer, Gary Johnson will want a strong character to fill the void if necessary and the former Brighton and Dover goalkeeper could fit the bill.

Date of Birth: 24/9/91 – Height: 1.88m – Place of Birth: St Albans – 21/22: League 2, Played 18, Goals Conceded 28, Yellow/Red Cards 2/0
