NEW GULL PROFILE

Sam talks about the newest Gull
Torquay United have signed Callum Morton? What year is it? 2020? I hope not, that wasn’t the greatest year in human history. The Torquay born striker, who was linked with the Gulls in 2020, has finally returned to his hometown club to join Jimmy Ball’s Yellows ahead of the 26/27 season. It is always great to see a local lad return, but who exactly is the new striker?
CAREER SUMMARY
Callum Morton was born in Torquay in 2000, and was part of the Torquay United Youth Academy until its closure in 2015. He then moved up to Somerset, joining their Academy before signing for West Brom in 2020. After a successful loan spell at Braintree in 18/19, Morton was linked with a loan move to the Gulls before joining Northampton on loan in January 2020. The loan move with the Cobblers was a success, as he scored 8 goals in 12 games to help them gain promotion to League One. Further loan spells with Lincoln, Fleetwood and Peterborough followed before a permanent move to Fleetwood followed in 2022.
Callum lasted a year at the Highbury Stadium before he moved across Lancashire to join Salford City. He struggled to make an impact at Moor Lane, and was loaned out to Forest Green Rovers in 2023 and back to Northampton in 2024. However, he suffered a serious knee injury in October 2024 which ruled out him out for the rest of the season. After his release by Salford at the end of the 2025 season, he joined Bristol Rovers in 2025 on a short term contract but only managed 6 games in total before being released in February 2026. He then dropped down to the National League South for the remaining of the season as he helped Worthing win the NLS title.
HIGHLIGHTS
Here he is scoring the 5th for Worthing in a 7-2 demolition of Dagenham and Redbridge last season:
And here he is showing great movement to equalise against Crewe:
TALKING ABOUT CALLUM
Steve Evans on Callum when playing for Bristol Rovers – “I thought he ran the back line of Crewe, at times, ragged. I don’t think they knew where he was, he popped up left, he popped up right.”
MORTON STATS
DATE OF BIRTH: 19TH JANUARY 2000 – 26 YEARS-OLD

POSITION: CENTRE-FORWARD
NL 25-26 STATS: APPEARANCES 9, GOALS 1, YELLOW CARDS 2, RED CARDS 0
MOST LIKELY/LEAST LIKELY
Most Likely To
- Score goals. When he’s been fit, Callum seems to have a habit of scoring goals. Now he has dropped down a few levels, if he can stay fit then he could fire us to glory.
- Play on the right as well as through the middle. Morton has played most of his career up top, but has played on the right. His versatility might be invaluable.
- Be seen in Park Lane. He’s a local lad, like Reidy, he will inevitably end up in Torquay’s finest establishment.
Least Likely To
- Play every minute of every game. Given his injury history, I reckon Jimmy will want to manage his minutes.
- Play up front with Deon Moore. The signing of Callum probably means the last-season revelation will probably be leaving Plainmoor.
CONCLUSION
Callum obviously has bags of talent, but so far his career has been plagued by injury. A bad shoulder injury at Lincoln kept him out for a while, followed by the horrific knee injury for Northampton, means that he has only managed 166 games by the age of 26. This has also meant that he has struggled to settle anywhere, having already played for 9 seperate clubs. Hopefully a full pre-season back in his hometown will get him up to speed, and he can help the Gulls finally get out of the National League South.
