David Johnson talks to TT about his team Altrincham FC
Hi David – so how much are you looking forward to the new season?
Really looking forward to the new season and attending live games again, just hope we can all get through the season attending with Covid not interfering.
What players have the club brought in this summer?
The plan was originally to move toward full time this coming season and go hybrid with a mix of PT and FT players, bur Covid etc has delayed this. However we’ve managed to freshen the squad slightly, bringing in two new forwards on free transfers. Marcus Dinanga and recently AJ Leitch-Smith from Morecambe. also signed a LB and midfielder.
How’s your pre-season form been?
Pre-season has been fairly good, Dinanga bagging 4 goals in 9 games, with Dan Mooney bagging 5, so we seem to be creating a little more than last season.
Who are your key players and why?
As with most teams the spine of the team is important, goalie Thompson has looked sharp, Tom Hannigan in defence leads the way with his experience, in midfield captain Moult usually is a stalwart in front of the back four. Upfront winger Colclough is entertaining with a good shot on him as well.
Have you got the right man in charge?
Manager Phil Parkinson has now gone FT from PT in close season, this will give him more time to work on the team. I like his style of play he wants from the team, he’s inexperienced at this level, its only his second season but proved last season he can work at this level and be successful.
What tactics/line-up should we expect on Saturday?
We tend to line-up 4-2-3-1 and like to play from the back with a possession based game.
What are your hopes and expectations for Alty’s season?
Main aim this season is to stabilise our position in the league and build from there. If we can avoid relegation and aim for mid-table most Alty supporters will be more than happy.
Will many away fans travel down for the game?
It’s 249 miles from Alty, but would imagine around 150 fans in attendance, which based on our average gate is not bad at all. Due to family commitments I can’t make the game unfortunately.
Who do you expect to be challenging for the title this season?
For me the top teams fighting for promotion will be Stockport, Wrexham and Torquay.
And finally, what’s your prediction for the game at Plainmoor?
I don’t normally like predicting scores, but I’d be more than happy with an away point. so will say 1-1.
