With the pre-season schedule done and dusted, focus turns to the all important kick off next Saturday. Two months on from the agony at Ashton Gate, Gary and his new look team are set to embark on a journey to take us back to the Football League. One penalty kick away from a return, Gary knows and hopes his squad have the belief to go one step further in what looks set to be a very competitive league. The squad looks settled and with a one or two loans possible this week, it is sure to be another rollercoaster ride for the Yellow army.
What’s happening this week……
Tuesday – TUFC Women v Liskeard
TUFC Women host Liskeard in their latest pre-season match. This game was originally scheduled for last Sunday, in which Grant Fisher’s ladies travelled to Saltash instead.
Saturday – TUFC v Altrincham @ Plainmoor (3pm KO)
Need I say anymore. Altrincham visit Plainmoor for the season opener, having been the last fixture of the regular season last campaign. The Plainmoor faithful will look forward to seeing what type of squad GJ has assembled in what will no doubt be a tough start. United failed to beat Alty last season when a 2-1 home defeat dented The Gulls title chase in February. A drab 0-0 in Greater Manchester on the last day of the regular season was a rather forgetful experience. New signings will be itching for a start and eager to impress. Don’t rule out a 14.00 loan signing or two!
Sunday – TUFC Women v Cardiff Bluebelles
CardiffBluebelles are the latest opposition for the Ladies in a packed pre-season schedule.
Birthdays
Gary Warren – 37
Gaz celebrates his 37th Birthday on Monday. The centre back made the switch to Tiverton Town in the summer.
Chris Todd – 40
Our very own Chris Todd celebrates his big 4-0. Chris is currently in charge of the Youth Development team at Plainmoor. Happy Birthday Toddy!
On this day……
17th August 2017
After just 4 games of the season, in which United had taken a solitary point, Kevin Nicholson is relieved of his managerial duties.
21st August 2010
A 2-0 home win over Bradford sees United go top of the league with 3 wins from 3. Stevens and Zebroski scored the goals.
20th August 1994
Linesman Wendy Toms makes history by becoming the first female to officiate at a Football League match.
18th August 1962
Teddy Adlington makes his TUFC debut away at Exeter in a game where Ernie Pym scores a hat trick in a 3-0 win.
22nd August 1961
Reg Jenkins nets twice to beat Grimsby 3-2. In doing so, he becomes the first player to score for all 3 of Devon’s professional clubs.
21st August 1954
The Gulls play their first match in their famous gold and blue colour. The black and white strips and ‘Magpie’ nickname are abandoned.
The Gulls quickly adapted to life in the Conference. This win gave them a 7 point haul from their opening 3 games, after a draw with Grays and 3-0 win over Aldershot. Goals from the new strike duo were to thank, 2 from Phillips and one from Sills.
“Terry Adlington makes his TUFC debut away at Exeter in a game where Ernie Pym scores a hat trick in a 3-0 win. ” Why don’t footballers have proper names like that anymore.
I thought he was Terry Adlington!
