21-22 PREVIEW
Dom Roman – @DomRoman
The Ed asks TT contributors questions about the upcoming season
Almost time – a new season awaits. Time to quiz our contributors on what will happen and most likely make us all look like fools! To be fair last year the predictions were optimistic and rightly so. Let’s see what 2021 brings…
TUFC PLAYER OF THE SEASON 21-22?
1 – Tom Lapslie 40%
2 – Joe Lewis 30%
3 – Danny Wright/Connor Lemonheigh-Evans 10%
4 – Dan Holman/Armani Little 5%
Thomas Kelly on Tom Lapslie – Judging on what I’ve seen from the livestream friendlies, he looks like a brilliant signing and his work ethic is second to none.
Danny Burnell on Tom Lapslie – Fancy him to quickly become a fans favourite with his tenacious work in midfield. Fancy a 6/7 goal haul as well.
Chris Wade on Joe Lewis – Outstanding defender who will be a leader and warrior at the back.
TUFC YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON 21-22? (21 AND UNDER)
1 – Keelan O’Connell/Joe Lewis/Gabriel Rogers 25%
2 – Klaidi Lolos 15%
3 – Dan Martin/Alex Moyes 5%
Luke Hunter on Keelan O’Connell – Based on nothing more than my faith in the Bournemouth youth academy; we again have a mature squad, and it feels like the young players are especially young – we’ll need them all to pull their weight on and off the field though if we’re to go one further this year.
Dom Roman on Joe Lewis – Joe is getting better and better, we did very well to get him signed up and he will be a key man this season.
Andy Charles on Gabby Rogers – Torquay lad returns after some time away, great left foot and as long as he gets a run in the team he might make us forget about Adam Randell.
TUFC TOP GOAL-SCORER 21-22?
1 – Dan Holman 60%
2 – Danny Wright 35%
3 – Klaidi Lolos 5%
Matt Roberts on Dan Holman – If he and Wright can stay fit, I’m excited to see what they can do together.
Andy Charles on Dan Holman – Retired former footballer turns top scorer. Holman has looked sharp as anything in pre-season, obviously kept himself very fit because of his business, and is more of a natural goal-scorer than any of our other options.
Luke Hunter on Danny Wright – If it’s not broken, don’t fix it – unless it’s Danny’s hamstring, in which case immediately fix it.
MOST ANTICIPATED FIXTURE?
Notts County (A) 40%
Others – Woking, Yeovil, Weymouth, Stockport, Altrincham, Maidenhead, Southend
Thomas Kelly – Notts County away. It has the feeling of Bristol Rovers away under Lingy when quite a few of our players jumped ship after the play off final defeat to Stevenage. The atmosphere will be electric and with it also being the first proper away day since Sutton last year, I’m expecting a great away following from the Yellow Army.
Ben Currie – Has to be Notts home and away. Expecting vitriol and fireworks.
NATIONAL LEAGUE TITLE WINNERS?
1 – Stockport County 60%
2 – Wrexham 20%
3 – Notts County 10%
4 – Chesterfield/Torquay United 5%
Karl Standeven – Stockport County have spent big along with a few others this close season. Wouldn’t begrudge them going up as seemed to be stuck in non-league forever.
Jonny Jones – Money is no guarantee of success, especially in this league, but Stockport will be pushing for top spot.
Luke Hunter – It is hard to look past Stockport but I suspect this will be a very tightly battled contest.
Ben Currie – Torquay United Football Club. There, I said it. In Gary we trust.
NATIONAL LEAGUE DARK HORSES?
1 – Torquay United/Dagenham 22%
2 – Eastleigh 16%
3 – Bromley/Bromley/Solihull Moors 10%
4 – Altrincham/Halifax 5%
Karl Standeven – Can I say us? With others spending big we don’t seem to be mentioned among the favourites but with Gary in charge we will be there or thereabouts.
Luke Hunter – There’s always one… Dagenham have been building momentum of late, I think they can be optimistic of a highly placed finish.
Thomas Kelly – Bromley really impressed me last season and I think they definitely could be up there again in the promotion race.
WHERE WILL THE GULLS FINISH?
Play-Offs 95% Champions 5%
Danny Burnell – 5th. Be tough this season with all the money being spent. Firmly expect Wrexham, Notts, Stockport & Chesterfield to be up there. Play-offs would represent a good season.
Matt Roberts – Somewhere in the playoffs. It’ll be like the Martin Ling season in league 2 when we’d got to the final the season before but fell at the first hurdle the next time round.
Thomas Kelly – I think we’ll finish in the 4th-7th bracket and have to go through the play-off eliminators if we want to get promotion. We’re definitely capable of pushing for top spot again, but I think finishing in the eliminator play off places is the absolute minimum for us to aim for this season.
ARE THE GULLS GOING UP?
YES 80% NO 20%
Andy Charles – Yes. Beating Notts County, Stockport and Chesterfield in the playoffs…in that order.
Danny Burnell – Of course. In a proper PO final at Wembley this time.
Sam Jones – Don’t you know pump it up, the Gulls are going up.
