Jake Andrews emphatically exorcised the memory of his penalty miss against Bath City the week before by netting a hat-trick as Torquay United outclassed Oxford City to remain top of National League South.
In wet and windy weather conditions United edged ahead on seven minutes when Jamie Reid saw his initial effort parried away by Oxford keeper Craig King before Saikou Janneh stabbed home the rebound. In the 21st minute, Janneh completed his brace as he fired home from close range following good work from substitute Ruairi Keating. Within a minute United added a third when Reid struck with his 20th of the season after being picked out by Connor Lemonheigh-Evans.
The Gulls extended their lead in the 34th minute when Andrews curled home United’s fourth directly from a corner. Four minutes later, Keating had an effort ruled out for offside but United made it 5-0 three minutes before the break as Andrews turned home a Reid cross with a shot that went in off the post. Andrews completed his treble with United’s sixth of the afternoon on 58 minutes with a back heel following a cross from Lemonheigh-Evans.
Josh Ashby and Kabongo Tshimanga then grabbed two consolation goals for Oxford in the 68th and 71st minutes respectively to give the score line a more respectable look before Reid slotted home the Gulls’ seventh on 79 minutes.
