UP THE SHITHOUSING YELLOWS
I don’t know about you but something that frustrated the life out of me under previous management was how much of a soft touch we were. So it was refreshing to hear the Tonbridge manager bemoan how physical we were as well as making the point about how many fouls we committed as well as our surrounding of the referee during the red card incident. Some may not like it but I think you have to have a bit of a nasty edge to you if you’re going to get out of this league and long may it continue!
STRENGTH OFF THE BENCH
Much has been made of the strength in depth we have this season, and that was key to getting the win on Saturday. The lively Worthington was withdrawn at half time as a precaution and on came Hayfield, who slotted in really well. With 20 minutes left on the clock Sean Robertson & Matt Jay entered the fray, and 13 minutes later all three subs combined to get the winner. A decent ball forward by Hayfield found Moore who slotted the lively Robertson in and his pass across the box was tucked home by Matt Jay. Considering Dennis, Young, Dyer & Shield were all missing, our bench still looked really strong and ultimately got us the win.
SAVIN SAVES THE DAY
There were some murmurings around Plainmoor last week about our new number one and whether he could have done better with the Horsham goal. Fast forward a week and Savin more than made amends with an outrageous save in the dying minutes. The ball looped over him from a header and somehow he managed to get a glove on it and steer it wide, almost reminiscent of David Seaman’s save against Sheffield United in the FA cup all those years ago.
One hallmark of his game I really like is his ability to come and claim crosses, it takes so much pressure off the defence knowing that he can come and claim high balls into the box.
START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON
Last season we had to wait until October for our first away win, so it was great to get that particular monkey off our back at the first attempt. I have a feeling we will be a lot stronger away from home this season as owing to the aforementioned mentality shift and the fact we’re no longer the soft touches we have been in recent seasons.
The away days don’t get any easier next week as we travel to Dagenham and that should be a decent yardstick for where we are this season given their investment this summer. Obviously first there’s Weston in midweek to get through but bring it on I say!
