Come 5pm or thereabouts on Saturday a big sigh of relief could be heard from wherever the Yellow Army was watching or listening to United’s win on the road.
Yes, it’s only the second match of the new season but the first away fixture for United’s travelling fans and to collect three points, especially after last week’s disappointment was greeted with much enjoyment – and relief.
There are, from reading the forums, a number of ‘fence sitters’ reserving their judgment of Jimmy Ball but he cannot be faulted for his openness and honesty and importantly care for his players.
By his own admission, he has the best strength and conditioning coach any club would wish for and together they ensure each player isn’t overused or overloaded.
That’s the beauty of having a big squad but as the weeks go by keeping every player happy might become a challenge.
Yesterday was a great example of how the substitutions Ball made helped United to a well earned away win. Sean Robertson and Matt Jay combining for the winner.
It was a delightful win over the angels of Tonbridge with Jake Wannell named in the Non-League Paper’s Team of the Day.
Next up, new leaders Weston-super-Mare, two home wins under their belt, come to Plainmoor on Tuesday night in what promises to be another tight affair.
But there always seems to be something special playing under the lights on a mid-week evening. The atmosphere somehow is different especially if it’s a warm August evening.
That is quickly followed by a trip to East London to face, as of today, another side who have the full six points, Dagenham & Redbridge.
Under ‘superstar influencer’ KSI Dagenham have managed to set up their own broadcast partnership with DAZN to livestream their (selected) fixtures to his 18.9m subscribers to his YouTube channel.
DAZN CEO Pete Oliver said, “This collaboration demonstrates how technology and compelling content can help clubs connect with fans in new ways and extend their reach far beyond traditional audiences.”
Does that mean other clubs, say in National South, can set up something similar?
In the mean -time let’s hope Dagenham don’t want to switch the match on Saturday to Friday night at short notice as a Saturday game would fall foul of the 3pm black-out. Surely the National League would turn down any request like that.
Interestingly, Jimmy Ball was watching Dagenham beat Farnham Town on Friday night.
Non-League Crowd Watch: Southend 8,613, Bury FC 3,637, Yeovil 3,486, Worthing 3,014, Hereford 2,932. Compare these with League 2: Barnet 2,230, Accrington 1,959.
This fans’ zone makes no excuses for banging on about our Forever Yellow membership scheme and I say again we are hugely grateful to all our members who have upgraded their original bronze tier to either silver, gold or platinum – and platinum members had an exclusive online evening with Jimmy Ball on Monday.
But we still have half our membership on bronze. If we can persuade you to increase your monthly membership we will be heading towards our £100,000 target.
Part of the current £85,000 helped secure the signing of Harry Shield (currently recovering from a broken toe) and we have other plans in the pipeline we would like to support.

We recently launched TUST’s Junior Gulls and this week announced a poem competition. TUST member and poet Nick Wotton has kindly donated four Junior Gulls memberships for a year. To win one of these we are asking any 5-16 year- olds to send us a poem about Torquay United, the Gulls, Plainmoor or their favourite player.
Nick will select the best four with each one receiving a year’s membership worth £25. Entries should be sent to fanszone.tu@gmail.com.
Following members’ feedback about the lack of information around the Bay for residents and holiday makers about events at Plainmoor TUST has produced A3 fixture posters detailing the next three month’s men’s and women’s home games. They have already gone up in various venues. If any member who runs a local business would like one please get in touch, info@tust.co.uk.
United’s Women’s first match in the National League went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat in their opening away day fixture at Wycombe Wanderers. A 72nd strike separated the two sides after a goalless first half.
During the week manager Ryan Perks added Brooke Ellis from Worcester City and Dani Tyson ex-Exeter and Dulwich Hamlet.
United’s Women are at Plainmoor on Sunday 23rd with Ascot United the visitors.
