Heart palpitations, blood pressure increasing along with a flood of victorious feelings working out the celebrations as the minutes tick by…..leading by a goal. Can we hang on and actually achieve what we’ve craved for years?
But enough of United’s defeat at Hornchurch.
With backs to the wall – where was that Wonderwall when we needed it? – England seemed to have lost all thoughts of attack hardly stringing a pass together.
So, the World Cup semi-final ended in bitter disappointment.
The manager’s fault? Plenty think so while more measured thoughts (?) feel it wasn’t solely down to Thomas Tuchel.
Argentina, and particularly Messi, went unpunished for a series of fouls, allegedly, if you look at all the slowed down pieces of action on social media.
FIFA to blame say some and some wit reckons FIFA stands for ‘Fixed It For Argentina’.
Last night’s third place match for Bronze was termed ‘meaningless’ for many and maybe in the full context of ending 60 years of hurt it was but nevertheless it was a crazy game which turned into a goal fest.
10 goals – and there could easily have been more – saw England have their best World Cup finish since 1966 the anniversary of which is on July 30th.
Only three English players have scored World Cup hat-tricks – Sir Geoff Hurst, Gary Linkeker and Harry Kane until Bukayo Saka’s.
And there was some kind of consolation for English fans as the England rugby team defeated Argentina on their home soil in Santiago del Estero – just, 31-24 after Argentina had a late, late try disallowed which could have seen a draw.
On to tonight. Can Argentina retain the trophy or will Spain prove to be better? It’s all to play for.
While all this international sport has been unfolding, Jimmy Ball’s United have continued with their pre-season programme.
A one goal defeat in mid-week at Plymouth Parkway, who look as if they could have a better season than their last one, tells the manager more about his players than a big win.
But talking of winning, the Gulls with around 150 Yellow Army in attendance, won at South rivals Weston-super-Mare after a late Callum Morton winner, playing in their newly released home kit.
That concludes the pre-season away programme with stronger opposition coming up at Plainmoor starting on Tuesday night (7.30pm kick-off) with Plymouth Argyle the visitors.
Saturday, pay what you want on the gate to go towards United’s Academy, sees Cardiff’s Under-21s while the following Friday (July 31st) has Exeter City at Plainmoor, the last friendly before Horsham come to town on August 8th.
Summer signing Sarah Stacey salvaged a late equaliser to give United’s Women a 1-1 draw in their Sunday pre-season fixture at a warm Coach Road against visitors Birmingham City Women.
The greatest all-rounder cricket has known. That’s the legacy of Sir Garry Sobers who died this week aged 89.
Reading his obituary just a few interesting details about his life. Born in Barbados he had an extra finger on each hand (one he ‘lost’ in an accident and the other was cut off), he left school at 13 to work in a furniture factory.
He played cricket for Barbados as a 16- year- old and first played a Test Match for the West Indies in 1954.
It was four years later that Sobers scored a record 365 not out against Pakistan at Kingston Jamaica.
Before he became successful at cricket, he played football in goal for Barbados and was a star at tennis, table tennis, basketball and athletics.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975.
A few weeks back I wrote a piece about World Cup shirts being sold. Yesterday, former Liverpool player Roger Hunt’s 1966 World Cup shirt he wore in a 2-0 win over France on July 20th was sold at auction for £11,000.
And Pele’s 1958 World Cup shirt has been sold at auction at Sotheby’s in New York for £3.7m.
