NEW GULL PROFILE
Ben Wade
Ben talks about the new defender
The signings keep on coming at Plainmoor, as the squad number reaches 7. I look at new centre back Sam Dreyer.
CAREER SUMMARY
Sam Dreyer started his footballing journey in the academy of EFL side Stevenage. Having turned 16, he went on loan to lower league club Biggleswade for a short time. He went onto have similar length spells at Hendon and Bedford Town as well during that season and a half. This first team experience would prove vital later on. He didn’t return to Stevenage, signing for Peterborough and was immediately loaned back to Bedford for the second half of the 22/23 campaign. Returning to The Posh at the start of the season just gone, Sam moved on loan to NLS team Hampton and Richmond making 16 appearances for the Beavers. Now the Gulls have signed him on a two-year deal.
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights are hard to come by for a young defender that has only made 16 first team appearance at National League South level last season, but going further back there is two smart finishes for the Posh Academy from 2023 and another for Kings Langley, so maybe an indication that Sam will chip in with some goals for United. He was also recorded taking up some NFL related challenges before the Super Bowl in 2023, but the content is only available on Posh+!
TALKING ABOUT DREYER
@TRHamptonFC – Tall young defender. Wins lots of headers, excellent one-on-one defending, doesn’t get beaten easily in a duel, would back him to score from set pieces. Excellent signing for the level, can definitely play a higher standard in the future.
DREYER STATS
DATE OF BIRTH: 3RD JANUARY 2004 – 20 YEARS-OLD
HEIGHT: 1.82M
POSITION: CENTRE BACK
NLS 23-24 STATS: APPEARANCES 16, GOALS 0
MOST LIKELY/LEAST LIKELY
Most Likely To
- Put performances in like his Dad. Sam Dreyer’s father John (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dreyer_(footballer) played for a host of clubs including Luton Town in the top-flight and also enjoyed a loan spell at Torquay during the 1985/86 season.
- Be the only one cheering on a league one club. Although never making a first team debut with The Posh, Sam Dreyer will surely be keeping an eye on Peterborough’s results after some academy time there.
- Be seen in Kents Cavern. He took a tour to be unveiled as a TUFC player! We may see him go to get his annual pass in due course!
Least Likely To
- Turn down a chance to go up for a set piece.
- Give a high five to Kents Cavern’s mascot. Have you seen the video. Welcome to the club, get denied a high five by a bear!
CONCLUSION
The word potential will be used a lot this summer in regards to the new signings, and this certainly applies to Sam Dreyer. The centre back has decent experience from around the lower leagues, and after a spell at Hampton, could be ready to make his mark for Torquay United. It’s clear that we are looking for young motivated guys who can grow together and hopefully move up the divisions together as well with the guidance of Wotton & Warnock, and that very much feels like the correct approach for the club.
