Dom discusses talking points ahead of the final game of the season

WREXHAM AFC (A)

One last game, one more trip to Plainmor in 22-23 and the visit of champions Wrexham awaits. Weeks ago this game looked horribly inevitable, relegation fodder versus Champions elect, and despite the Gulls chirping up right at the death, that’s how it’s panned out. The Wrexham supporters will be on top form, whilst we lick our wounds. How will United’s players react to the crushing last minute equaliser at Alty, and how fussed will the celebratory Wrexham players be about this dead rubber? Tomorrow night we’ll find out, as what feels like the longest season in recent memory, comes to a close.

THE LINE-UP

Hopefully Dean Moxey returns from injury tomorrow night, he’s been a fantastic servant for the Gulls and has still been one of our best players this season, playing 41 games at the age of 37. Respect. If not then I guess Wyatt remains in the line-up for this one. Ben’s performances have varied throughout the season, and it’s anybody’s guess whether we’ll see him at Plainmoor come July/August. The rest of the team (barring injuries) pretty much picks itself. In yet another summer of uncertainty we don’t know who will be returning for 2023-24, the sure sign of a poorly planned club that is stumbling into the division below.

THE OPPOSITION

What more is there to say about Wrexham AFC? Never has a NL club gathered so much publicity, with even non-football followers mentioning them to me, the Hollywood owners have made the biggest splash possible, and most importantly fulfilled their main aim of taking the club back to the EFL. For the many die-hard supporters of the team, this is reward for their loyalty, and it’s also pleasing to see ex-Gull Luke Young find recognition and success. His time at Plainmoor could easily have scarred a promising career, but he has bounced back. Otherwise the other NL clubs will no doubt be happy to see the backs of them this summer, giving them better chances for their own promotion push. A crazy project, but one which will no doubt continue to capture the imagination of many people in the coming years. Envious? Oh, just a bit..

THE END

Numerous supporters have mentioned to me how they are looking forward to getting this season out of the way, and I don’t blame them. Like any relegation season there has been copious amounts of pain, interspersed with the odd sunny day when you think the Gulls are turning things around. The infusion of experience and quality from Dawson and Nouble came just too late, and as we look back at this season, the regrets and if only’s will be referred to time and time again. There’s only one way to push this season into the back of our minds, and that’s by re-energizing the club, re-invigorating the squad and winning the NLS next year. Are Torquay United up for that fight? Who knows. For now I’ll see you at Plainmoor, one more for the road dear friends…

  1. Thank you Dom for your prodigious output on Torquay Talk all season long.
Given some of the dross served up I think we the fans have continued to support the Club in very good numbers. Lets hope the recruitment for 2023/24 is such that next season we will really have something to cheer whoever is the Manager.
