ON THIS DAY
GULLS MEMORIES FROM THIS DAY IN TIME
1970 – A DEBUT FOR IAN TWITCHIN
Teignmouth-born Ian Twitchin made his debut for the Gulls on this day in 1970, away to Tranmere, and over the course of the next 11 years went onto become a United legend. He ended up with a fantastic 436 appearances, one of only 5 players to make over 400 for United. Ian sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 65.

2010 – TORQUAY UNITED 2-1 SHREWSBURY TOWN
Two second-half goals eased Torquay’s relegation fears as they beat fading play-off hopefuls Shrewsbury Town.
Town went ahead when Dean Holden’s far-post shot from Jake Simpson’s corner deflected in off keeper Scott Bevan. But Mark Ellis levelled for the Gulls before Scott Rendell hit the 61st-minute winner, both goals coming from corners by left-back Kevin Nicholson. Bevan superbly denied Town’s Dave Hibbert, while Town keeper David Button kept out Nicky Wroe’s fierce free-kick. Torquay are now nine points clear of safety, while faltering Shrewsbury have slipped to 12th after their fifth defeat on the trot – six points adrift of the play-off pack with just seven games left.
Torquay XI: Bevan, Nicholson, Robertson, Branston, Ellis, Wroe, Mansell, Carayol (Stevens), Benyon (Charnock), Rendall, Zebroski Subs Not Used: Poke, Smith, Rowe-Turner, Thompson, O’Kane Booked: Branston, Carayol
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy birthday to Nathan Smith (27). Nathan Smith was signed on loan in the summer of 2015 by new United manager Paul Cox. Before long Cox was replaced by Kevin Nicholson, and the Port Vale man became a key player as the Gulls fought for a miraculous great escape. Smith won the Young Player of the Year and Player of the Year awards for his efforts, returning to Port Vale in 2016, where he still plays now.
