Phew…..well that second 45 minutes at York Road escalated quickly. But we got over the line and GJ and the lads will look to gain momentum going into next weekends game. Let’s have a look at what’s in store across TQ1 this coming week.
What’s happening this week……
Saturday – TUFC v Grimsby Town @ Plainmoor (3pm KO)
Looking to build on last weeks triumph, the Gulls return to Plainmoor for the visit of Grimsby. United will be eager to get their first home win of the season after a torrid time on Bank Holiday Monday. The yellow army will be in full voice for this one again as the Gulls aim for 3 points to push them up the league. Grimsby will be no mugs however, having been relegated to the NL last season, the mariners have adapted well having won 2 and drawn 1 of their first 3 games.
Saturday – Swindon Supermarine Youth U18’s v TUFC Youth U18’s @ Swindon Supermarine FC
Fresh from their resounding 10-3 win on the opening day over Paulton last weekend, Chris Todd’s young Gulls travel to Wiltshire looking to build on their excellent start. The lads will be eager to get as many points on the board to stand them in good stead in this competitive 9 team division.
Sunday – v TUFC Women v Ilminster Town Ladies @ Stoke Gabriel FC
4-2 winners last time out, Grant Fisher’s Ladies will be looking for back to back wins as they take on Ilminster for their first home game of the campaign. The Ladies will have their sights firmly set on winning the title this season.
Birthdays
Bruce Rioch – 74
The 24-capped Scotland international and former Gulls Midfielder will be celebrating his 74th birthday on Monday. He had a fantastic career with the likes of Luton, Aston Villa & Derby before joining Plainmoor in a player-coach capacity.
Tim Sills – 42
One of TUFC’s modern greats will celebrate his 42nd birthday on Friday. ‘Zorro’ who clinched our Play off final victory over Cambridge, is now involved with Hamworthy Utd, who play in the Wessex Premier League.
Danny Wright – 37
The first of our current squad celebrating their birthday on Friday is Talisman Danny Wright. The Striker will be eager for a late birthday present on Saturday with a win at Plainmoor.
Dan Martin – 22
Sharing his birthday with Wrighty, Dan turns 22 on Friday. Signed in the summer from Cardiff, the Left Back will be keen to break into the Gulls starting line up.
On this day……
12th September 2018 – After less than a year at the helm, Manager Gary Owers is sacked, leaving Torquay in the bottom half of the National League South.
8th September 2018 – The Yellows lose 1-0 at home to Chippenham to condemn them to their 3rd defeat of the season and leave them lying in their lowest ever league position. United would not lose again in the league until 19th January.
12th September 2017 – Former Gull Brett Williams scores a hat trick for Bromley as they defeat Torquay 3-1.
9th September 1995 – A 16-year old Tony Bedeau makes his Gulls debut away at Cardiff coming on as a sub.
10th September 1932 – United thump Southend 8-1 at Plainmoor.
7th September 1931 – Torquay suffer their joint heaviest ever defeat by losing 2-10 to Fulham. (And you think the Woking game was bad……)
A trip down memory lane..
Torquay United 2-1 Northwich Victoria
7th September 2008 – Blue Square Premier
Venue: Plainnoor
Attendance: 1,752
United Line up: Poke, Robertson, Ellis, Woods, Hodges, Carlisle, Mansell, Hargreaves, Carayol, Benyon, Green
Subs: Wroe, Thompson, Sills, Stevens, Yeoman
This game may not live long in the memories of most fans, but this was a must win game for Gulls. After losing 4 of their previous 5 games, Buckles men were languishing close to the relegation zone and a repeat of last seasons play off hopes were fading fast. Carlisle put Torquay ahead on 10 minutes, before they were pegged back by Vic. It took a 90th minute penalty from Tim Sills to give them just their second win of the season. This sparked a massive upturn in fortunes as they went on a fantastic unbeaten run of 14 games.
