@ExGulls looks at what former Gulls have been up to!
With August coming and going, we’ve seen the start of a new season and the end of the transfer window. Plenty of Ex-Gulls have had electrifying starts to the season as the Premier League and Championship sit back ahead of the International break for FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Saikou Janneh – Bristol City
We start ofF with Saikou Janneh who’ll be aiming to break into Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City squad this season. The striker was given his first start in the Carabao Cup away against Forest Green Rovers and showed Pearson what he can offer, scoring a brace to firstly equalise and then put the Robins ahead. They were beaten on penalties with Saikou Janneh scoring his spot-kick.
Kieffer Moore – Cardiff City
After the Euro’s it’s not too much of a surprise that Mick McCarthy hasn’t rushed back in Moore but he’s already scored his first goal of the season in a 2-0 win away against Blackpool. There were Deadline Day rumours of him joining Wolverhampton Wanderers but the Premier League side didn’t match Cardiff City’s valuation of the Welshman.
He’s also been called up to Rob Page’s Wales squad ahead of their FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia after playing a friendly against Finland.
Sam Sherring – Accrington Stanley
Despite a lot of social media rumours about a possible return to Plainmoor, Sherring has joined Accrington Stanley on loan from A.F.C. Bournemouth. The defender had featured in a few pre-season friendlies and the club have decided now is the perfect time to join a Football League side on a temporary basis.
Jayden Stockley – Charlton Athletic
It’s not been the start Nigel Adkins would’ve wanted. They had to wait until Matchday 5 for their first win of the season and it came against struggling Crewe Alexandra. For Jayden Stockley, he’s had a positive start to the season scoring half of their league goals so far. He gave the Addicks the lead against Milton Keynes Dons, in a 2-1 defeat, before scoring the second in a 2-0 win against the afore mentioned Crewe Alexandra.
Mustapha Carayol – Gillingham F.C.
For the first time in 18 months, Mustapha Carayol was able to play competitive football on the opening day of the Football League season. The winger left Turkish side Adana Demirspor at the end of the 2019/20 season before signing for Gillingham F.C. He’s already of the mark scoring a superb free-kick in a 2-1 win over Morecambe F.C. at Priestfield, and has featured in every game so far this season.
Anthony O’Connor – Morecambe F.C.
The Irishmen has scored his first goal for his new side in a Lancashire derby Carabao Cup tie. Morecambe F.C. probably fancied themselves in the tie with Preston North End having a poor start to the season. When O’Connor scored the Shrimpers were 2-0 down but dragged it back to 2-2 before Preston ran away with the cup-tie to progress through to the next round.
Alex Bass and John Marquis – Portsmouth F.C.
Portsmouth F.C. have had a strong start to the season only losing once In their opening 5 games. They kicked off the season with a 1-0 win against Fleetwood with Alex Bass keeping his first clean sheet of the season. Unfortunately for Alex, he’s lost the number 1 spot to Republic of Ireland International Gavin Bazunu who is currently on loan from Manchester City.
At the other end of the pitch, striker John Marquis scored his first goal of the season, opening the scoring in a 2-0 win at Fratton Park against Crewe Alexandra.
Aiden O’Brien – Sunderland A.F.C.
Currently sitting pretty at the top of EFL League 1 are Sunderland A.F.C., winning all but one game in the league so far this season. For Aiden O’Brien, he’s been shining in the cup competitions, scoring a penalty against Port Vale in the First Round of the Carabao Cup before scoring a hat-trick in a cup upset in the Second Round against Championship side Blackpool F.C.
Adebayo Akinfenwa – Wycombe Wanderers
In his swansong year, Bayo Akinfenwa may not be starting regularly at the age of 39 but he still knows where the goal is and put Wycombe ahead in their Carabao Cup tie against Stevenage F.C., we’ll get onto one of the Stevenage F.C. goal-scorers later! Wycombe won on penalties and now face a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium in the next round.
Mark Ellis v Barrow A.F.C.
He scored goals for fun at Notts County last season in the National League but Mark Ellis joined Barrow A.F.C. ahead of the new season and the Bluebirds skipper has been sent-off in the opening encounters of the season. He was shown a straight red in their 1-1 draw against Bristol Rovers after 30 minutes.
Amrit Bansal-McNulty – Crawley Town
The young midfielder was the only transfer on Deadline Day deal involving an Ex-Gull. The QPR youngster, who spent last season on loan with Como 1907 in Serie C, has joined Crawley Town on a 4-month loan deal.
Alex Fisher – Newport County
After a successful trial in South Wales, Alex Fisher put pen to paper on a one-year deal ahead of the new season. He’s already found the back of the net this season scoring the winning goal against Tranmere Rovers.
Lucas Covolan – Port Vale
The Samba stopper seems to have righted the wrongs from his opening day red card against Northampton Town, keeping clean sheets in all 4 games since returning from his suspension. Ironically, the referee who sent him off against Northampton Town on the opening day was none other than Simon Mather.
Jamie Reid – Stevenage F.C.
As mentioned earlier, Bayo Akinfenwa gave Wycombe Wanderers the lead against Stevenage F.C. in their Carabao Cup tie, but it was Jamie Reid who put Stevenage F.C. ahead to score his first goal for his new side.
Conor Wilkinson – Walsall F.C.
Walsall F.C. are another side who’ve had a shaky start to the season but earned their first win of the season against Stevenage F.C. A 5th minute strike by Conor Wilkinson gave the points to Walsall F.C. at the Bescot Stadium.
Scott Boden and Tyrone Marsh – Boreham Wood
In the National League we’re seeing an Ex-Gulls striker partnership arrive with last season’s loanee Scott Boden and 2015-16 campaigner Tyrone Marsh lead the line after Kabongo Tshimanga’s departure to Chesterfield F.C.
The latter scored a superb dink over goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons to double Boreham Wood’s lead against Weymouth F.C. as they won 2-0.
Paul McCallum – Dagenham & Redbridge
Dagenham & Redbridge are tipped to be the dark horses of the National League this season, quietly getting on with business and have had a superb start to the season. Paul McCallum is the main man up top for them and he’s already scored twice this season with goals against Bromley F.C. and his former side Barnet F.C.
Billy Waters – F.C. Halifax Town
Billy Waters is loving life at F.C. Halifax Town after leaving Plainmoor. Despite an opening day defeat against Maidenhead United, where Waters scored the opening goal, Halifax have beaten Woking F.C. and Altrincham F.C. with Waters also scoring in those games making it 3 goals in 3 games.
Josh Umerah – Wealdstone F.C.
Despite a 0-0 draw against National League new boys Southend United, Wealdstone F.C. have had a tough start to the new season scoring only 1 goal. Josh Umerah’s goal against Woking F.C. was that goal on the opening day of the season as the Stones were beaten 2-1.
Josh McQuoid – Weymouth F.C.
Weymouth F.C. earned their first win of the season on Bank Holiday Monday beating Maidenhead United 3-1. Josh McQuoid has once again been given the captains armband by manager Brian Stock for the 2021-22 season and got his first of the season, restoring Weymouth F.C.’s 2 goal lead just after the hour mark.
Joe Quigley – Yeovil Town
Joe Quigley has had an electric start to the season, currently joint top scorer in the National League with the likes of Billy Waters and Kabongo Tshimanga despite only playing twice. Yeovil Town had to postpone their opening game after the club had a Covid outbreak but once they returned they were beaten by King’s Lynn before beating Aldershot Town. Joe Quigley has scored all 3 goals with a brace in the 2-1 win against Aldershot.
Krystian Pearce – Hereford F.C.
The Barbados defender has joined Ex-Gull Josh Gowling at Hereford F.C. Previously contracted at Boreham Wood, the defender was transfer listed by the club at the end of last season and hadn’t featured in their preseason campaign.
Ashley Hemmings – Kidderminster Harriers
Arguably one of the best players in the National League North, Ashley Hemmings has scored 3 goals in their opening 4 games of the season as Kidderminster Harriers have had an unbeaten start. Goals against York City, Blyth Spartans and a penalty against Southport F.C. put Harriers 3rd in the table behind A.F.C. Fylde and Brackley Town who have won all 4 games.
Momodou Touray, Alex Fletcher and Ryan Clarke – Bath City
At Twerton Park, we currently have 5 Ex-Gulls including one of their latest signings, striker Momodou Touray. Touray who made a cameo appearance at Dover Athletic during the 2019-20 season has joined on loan from Salford City and scored on his debut against Billericay Town. Alex Fletcher also scored his first goal for the club as he signed just before the season was rendered null & void last year. Ryan Clarke kept a clean sheet in that 3-0 win, the keeper also kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win away against Tonbridge Angels.
Adebayo Azeez and Jake Robinson – Dartford F.C.
Another Ex-Gull strike partnership which seems to be brewing is Adebayo Azeez and Jake Robinson at Dartford F.C. They currently sit outside the play-offs but goals from Billy Kee have helped them earn a point against Tamworth F.C. and Barwell F.C. He also scored in their 2-1 defeat against Rushden & Diamonds as Coalville F.C. were without another Ex-Gull, Chris Robertson, who was sent-off in their previous game against Tamworth F.C.
