The weeks keep ticking by, and with every training session, and every friendly, the Gulls will look to get fitter and ready for the season opener on the 21st against Altrincham. I look ahead to what’s coming up this week, including two games for the busy TUFC Women’s team…
What’s happening this week……
Tuesday – TUFC v AFC Bournemouth U23’s @ Plainmoor (19.45 KO)
The final warm up game for the Gulls as they face the Cherries at Plainmoor. A final chance for any trialists to impress and players to stake a claim in the starting line up. 11 days until the real stuff kicks off, GJ will be eager for his players to impress and start looking at cementing formations and players ahead of the new campaign. Bournemouth youngsters travelled to a empty Plainmoor last pre-season, where goals from Umerah, Moxey & Kozsela sealed a comfortable 3-0 win. Sherring and O’Connell started that day with the former becoming a United mainstay in last season’s campaign. O’Connell will be eager to impress against his former employers.
Friday – Helston Women v TUFC Women @ Kellaway Park (19.45 KO)
The ladies preparations continue to go from strength to strength as they play two games over the weekend. First up a trip into Cornwall to play Helston. The ladies, who won 5-1 out at Liverton last week, will look to build on their positive results in pre-season ahead of their campaign kicking off.
Sunday – Liskeard Athletic Women FC v TUFC Women
The second double header of the weekend is another cross border trip to Liskeard. Liskeard will play one division below their opponents when the season kicks off.
Birthdays
Sean McGinty – 28
The former Irish U21 international and Gulls centre back celebrates his 28th Birthday on Wednesday. After leaving Torquay, McGinty went north of the border and has had spells with Partick Thistle, Morton and now Ayr United.
Jake Gosling – 28
Another one celebrating their 28th Birthday on Wednesday, it was a case of what could have been in a Gulls shirt for the Gibraltar international. He only managed 14 appearances in Yellow. He currently plays in the Northern Premier League (Midlands) with Sporting Khalsa.
On this day……
12th Aug 2014 – After a defeat to Gateshead on the opening day, Torquay bounced back to beat Welling 3-0 for their first points in the 14/15 season. The goals came from Bowman, Courtney Cameron and Ajala.
14th Aug 2012 – Then Championship heavyweights Leicester visited Plainmoor in the League Cup 1st round. They would run out 4-0 winners with a certain Jamie Vardy marking his Foxes debut with a goal.
12th Aug 2007 – After their 90 year stay in the Football League came to end in May, the Gulls played out a 0-0 against Grays Athletic in their first ever game at Conference level. A crowd of 4012 people were there to view it.
14th Aug 1993 – David Byng becomes the youngest ever player and goal-scorer after he nets against Walsall. The striker was aged 16 years and 36 days.
15th Aug 1989 – Man Utd visit Plainmoor for a pre season match. United win 1-0 courtesy of a Michael Duxbery goal.
9th Aug 1997 – Kevin Hill comes off the bench to mark his first Gulls appearance. I needn’t tell you he went on to become the club’s all time record appearance holder. Legend.
10th Aug 1968 – Mickey Cave makes his debut in a 3-0 win over Southport
Famously remembered as the Buckle grudge match. After losing the L2 PO final in May to Stevenage, much to the Yellow Army’s anger, Buckle joined Rovers. It would be Martin Ling and the impressive Gulls following who would have the last laugh that day, as goals from Atieno and a Rene Howe penalty secured Torquay’s first win of the season.
