TUFC TOP TRUMPS
A TT jury rank ex-Gulls Top Trumps style..
“At TT we love a good rating, and we thought that it would be interesting during these non-footballing times to go back and rate the ex-Gulls who have entertained us over the last 30 years (in good and bad ways). The carefully selected TT jury score 5 (randomly picked) players each time in various areas. Check out the first batch below…”
A is for…
JIMMY AGGREY
Defender – 1998-2001
GAMES – 110** GOALS – 2***
PACE – 6 PASSING – 4
POWER – 7 SKILL – 5
SHOOTING – 3 TACKLING – 7
OVERALL – 55%*
Profile – Former Chelsea youngster Aggrey joined United in 1998, eventually establishing himself as a first team regular by 2000 after the departure of Wayne Thomas. The popular defender won the supporters player of the season award for 2000-01 with a number of strong displays at centre back, but new boss Roy McFarland was not a fan and the tall defender joined ex-team mate Neville Southall at Dover Athletic in late 2001.

TOBY AJALA
Winger – 2014-15 & 2016
GAMES – 70 GOALS – 7
PACE – 9 PASSING – 6
POWER – 6 SKILL – 7
SHOOTING – 6 TACKLING – 6
OVERALL – 67%
Profile – Toby Ajala joined United in July 2014 as Chris Hargreaves rebuilt his squad for Conference football. The winger was impressive early in the season with his pace and work rate, but much like the rest of the squad his form tailed off as the season wore on. Ajala left for Dover in the summer of 2015, before returning for another spell at Plainmoor in 2016 – making little impression in a team scrapping to avoid relegation under Kevin Nicholson.

ADEBAYO AKINFENWA
Striker – 2004-05
GAMES – 41 GOALS – 16
PACE – 7 PASSING – 6
POWER – 10 SKILL – 7
SHOOTING – 8 TACKLING – 7
OVERALL – 75%
Profile – After enjoying a journeyman start to his career, Adebayo was signed by Leroy Rosenior in 2004 to help replace David Graham and beef up United’s attack in League One. After a stuttering start the muscular attacker found his confidence at Plainmoor and scored a number of crucial goals. Unfortunately the Gulls could not avoid relegation and he joined Swansea City in 2005 – his time at Plainmoor proving a stepping stone to a successful Football League career.

MYLES ANDERSON
Defender – 2017-18
GAMES – 23 GOALS – 2
PACE – 4 PASSING – 4
POWER – 6 SKILL – 3
SHOOTING – 4 TACKLING – 5
OVERALL – 43%
Profile – Journeyman Myles made United his 11th professional club in February 2017, and initially did well enough as Nicho’s team avoided relegation. Myles scoring in the final game versus North Ferriby on a sunny day at Plainmoor. His form persuaded Nicholson to give the centre back a new contract for 17-18, but after an error prone start to the season he was released by new boss Gary Owers in February 18. Myles has played for another four clubs since then.

TAIWO ATIENO
Striker – 2011-12
GAMES – 49 GOALS – 7
PACE – 7 PASSING – 5
POWER – 6 SKILL – 6
SHOOTING – 7 TACKLING – 4
OVERALL – 58%
Profile – Kenyan international Atieno joined Martin Ling at United in 2011 after impressing in pre-season friendlies. The striker was used mainly as a back-up to Rene Howe, but did chip in some goals during a season where United made the play-offs. This included one early in the season as Ling’s new look team turned over Paul Buckle’s Bristol Rovers and a goal in the 2nd leg of the play-off semi-finals against Cheltenham. The striker was then released in 2012.
