Match Preview Q&A – Woking FC by Matty Jones

“Dowson never gives up and creates that siege mentality that every team needs”

The match preview Q&A series continues, as Matty Jones discusses ‘The Cards’ of Woking FC:

Hi Matt – before we discuss the Cards tell us a bit about yourself and how long have you followed Woking FC?

Woking fan all my life. My dad introduced me to Woking when I was 7. (I am now 30). My little boy now comes along to every game. He is 3 and already in his third season (please see picture!).

How would you summarise your season so far?

Disappointed we aren’t top by ten points. Only joking. In one word we are over-achieving but I still don’t think we have reached anywhere near our potential.

You sit very well placed, what’s been the key to your success so far?

Being the underdogs. No-one expected us to be anywhere apart from bottom. Our manager Dowse has also been massive. He never gives up and creates that siege mentality that every team needs when they are going through tough periods.

What’s been the highlights up to this point?

The highlight was beating Bromley 2-1 at home. We had been on a bad run of form (particularly at home) and the win really helped the players gain confidence and also helped improve our home form.

How’s your recent form been heading into Saturday’s encounter at Plainmoor?

Our match at Ebbsfleet was called off last week. Before that we got knocked out of the trophy against Kingstonian. The week before the trophy we beat Hartlepool 2 v 1. Take what you want from that.

Who are your key players and why?

Ben Gerring. He has been immense this season. Him and Moussa Diarra are the reason why we have looked quite solid at the back. However all the players have played their part this season and have achieved above expectations.

What are your thoughts on the manager and what formation/tactics do the team utilise?

The manager is brilliant. He has certainly bought the feel good factor back to Woking. I can’t talk about formations… That would be giving the secrets to our success away.

Ben Gerring will get a warm reception I am sure, how’s he been doing for you?

As I mentioned before, Ben Gerring has been immense this season. Probably one of the first players on the team-sheet. However it will be nice for him to have a ‘home game’ when we play your lot.

What’s Cards away following like and will many make the trip down to Torquay?

We usually take quite a good following wherever we go. Not sure if Christmas could have a bearing on how many fans we take.

Do you think the Cards can achieve a second promotion in a row and what are your expectations for the New Year?

If we stay where we are at the moment, I truly believe we are the team that can be capable of going a good run towards the end of the season. No-one seems to want to win the league at the moment.

What New Year’s resolutions would you give the team?

Pledge to not lose sight of the beliefs and the determination that has got us to 41 points at this current time.

And finally United have been on a terrible run and desperately need to pick up points, give us a match prediction for Saturday?

Bad form always comes to an end. I just hope it is not against us. I will go for a 1-0 win (Gerring header in the 89th minute).

Cheers Matty
