“Darren Sarll is great with the fans and the players really respect him”
The match preview Q&A series continues, as Adam Barrington discusses ‘The Glovers’ of Yeovil Town:
Hi Adam and happy Xmas to you – before we discuss your team, tell us a bit about yourself and how long have you supported the Glovers?
Merry Christmas! I Live in Shepton Mallet in Somerset and apart from supporting Yeovil I’m a big VW enthusiast. I have been following Yeovil town up and down the country for around 26 years now.
How would your summarise your season up to this point?
I would say excellent, probably exceeding expectations with a new squad. Winning 7 in a row is a particular highlight and being 2nd at Christmas, I think every Yeovil fan will be delighted.
How’s your recent form been heading into the Christmas fixtures?
I would say good. Unbeaten in the league in the last 6 games, just maybe a few too many draws.
What’s been your highlights of the season so far?
Winning 7 in a row and the recent game against Halifax, wining 2-0 with 10 men for 80 mins (probably the best I’ve seen the team play this season).
Who are your key players and why?
Rhys Murphy – joint top goal scorer in the league with some bloke called Reid?? Some of his goals this season have been leagues above. And Jimmy Smith, his presence in midfield and awareness to pass the ball into goal-scoring areas has been a particular highlight.
Tell us a bit about your gaffer and how does he like to set the team up?
I think I can speak for all Yeovil fans in that he reminds us a lot of Gary Johnson. He is great with the fans and the players really respect him. He sets up the team I would say very attacking, which is our greatest strength.
LAST TIME OUT
Who are your new owners and have you been impressed with them so far?
New owners are Scott Priestnall and Errol Pope, and they have been very impressive so far, with already meet and greet and fan days, plus we are already seeing investment on and off the field.
What’s Huish Park like for those who haven’t visited before and how’s the atmosphere at home games?
It’s a very tidy ground with single tiered stands all round. Covered terrace for the home end but sadly uncovered terrace for the away fans, so bring an umbrella! Saying that there is a small section of covered seats for the away fans as well.
I may be biased but the atmosphere is probably the best in the National League, with a very vocal and loyal fanbase.
Where’s best for the Yellow Army to sample pre-match food and drinks, and where’s best to park up?
You will find a large marquee outside the ground that both set are welcome to use and very reasonable prices. Or there a pub called The Arrow about 10 mins walk from the ground. For away fans, best to park at the ground and it is well signposted.
How disappointing was it to get relegated last season and do you think you can bounce back at the first attempt?
Yeah it was extremely disappointing, well in fact it’s been very depressing in recent seasons with a fair few relegation struggles not helped with an awful old manager and owners. But with Darren Sarll in charge and new owners, I think we will go straight back up.
Gary Johnson is a legend down your way. Tell us a bit about what GJ means to your club and what sort of reception will he get?
He means a great deal to all Yeovil fans, probably one of the best managers we ever had. Getting us to the Championship was an unbelievable achievement. He will always get a great reception.
And finally, we’ve all been looking forward to these tasty fixtures – what’s your prediction for the Boxing Day and New Year’s Day games?
I’m going to go for a close win for Yeovil on Boxing Day – maybe 2-1 or 1-0 and New Year’s, going for a draw 1-1.
