Six years in hospital and over 100 operations with another scan imminent Saturday’s legendry guest in The Cove was Falklands hero Simon Weston OBE, CBE.
He spoke with humour, talking about his injuries and stories of his experiences as the after- meal speaker before the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round.
His appearance in the Directors’ Box along with the news of the sudden death of much- loved goalkeeper/coach Kevin Miller has the effect of putting a football match into perspective.
After the game United manager Jimmy Ball spoke movingly about Miller who had a loan spell at Plainmoor in 2007.
Oh yes, there was a football game played in front of 1,297, a rather disappointing attendance as a kind of makeshift United side eased to a 6-1 victory with the result never in doubt after Torquay scored four by half-time.

No doubt, Sonny-Blu Lo-Everton who celebrated his birthday during the week will enjoy his first ever hat-trick with his manager challenging him to score at least twelve over the season.
On his current form he is one of the side’s stand-out performers.
Sitting in the directors’ box, literally as the director of the day on duty, I sat alongside a dozen or more from AFC Stoneham and they were right behind their goal being scored reacting with the inevitable over excitement!
They’ve made some money from their cup run which as their chairman explained to me will help finance the 161 teams with around 1,700 players making them one of the largest grassroots community clubs in the country.
And as he told me, their football complex ground isn’t owned by them so they don’t receive any money for bar sales or food sold.

Two late, late goals saw United’s Women go down 2-3 at Plainmoor on Sunday in front of 156. It had all looked so good for the home side as Sarah Stacey scored in the first half and again straight after half-time but the visitors claimed all three points with a deflected last minute winner.
The Women’s new shirt which has received much praise went on sale today with a generous 20% going to the fund for Roxy Thomas.
Following Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Weston-super-Mare in the FA Youth Cup United’s youth side have been drawn away to Barnstaple in the Second Qualifying Round.
I have been reading that the 3pm TV black-out may be coming to an end, not immediately but possibly when the next broadcasting cycle starts for 2029-30. Stay tuned!
