NEW GULL PROFILE

Sam talks about the newest Gull
United’s third signing of the summer is Sean Robertson, who joins the Gulls on a free transfer from Cliftonville in the Northern Irish Premiership. The former Forest Green Rovers man joins Jimmy Ball’s United ahead of the 26/27 season, but who exactly is our new signing?
CAREER SUMMARY
Sean was born in Wandsworth, South London, in 2001 and joined the Crystal Palace Academy when he was 11. He spent 11 years with the Eagles, but never made an appearance before being released in 2022. He was then snapped up by Forest Green Rovers, where he made his first Senior Appearance against Ipswich in August that year. He would join Crewe in January 2023 on loan, which is where he spent the rest of the season.
He spent the 23/24 season back at The New Lawn, but struggled to make any impression in the first team after their relegation to League Two. He made 17 appearances in all competitions that season, and was released that summer after yet another relegation.
The Emerald Isle then came calling for Sean as he went on to join Derry City. He would only spend 7 months there, as he would then move down to Dublin to join Shamrock Rovers on a free. He only managed one appearance there before being released, and found his way to Belfast to join Cliftonville in the Northern Ireland Premiership. He had one season as Solitude (yes, that’s really the name of the ground) before coming back to England and joining the Gulls.

TALKING ABOUT SEAN
Jimmy Ball talking about Robertson’s signing for United – “He’s very aggressive, very dynamic in the way he attacks. I think he will really give us some impetus in our attacking threat”
BAKER STATS
DATE OF BIRTH: 6TH JUNE 2001 – 25 YEARS-OLD
BIRTHPLACE: WANDSWORTH, ENGLAND

POSITION: RIGHT MIDFIELD
NIFL PREM 25-26 STATS: APPEARANCES 11, GOALS 1, ASSISTS 1, YELLOW CARDS 1, RED CARDS 0
MOST LIKELY/LEAST LIKELY
Most Likely To
- Play anywhere on the right hand side. He seems to have played Right Back, Right Wingback, Right Midfield and Right Wing in his career so far. That sort of versatility will be very useful.
- Speed off down the Right Wing. Apparently he is fast, which is something we have sorely missed.
Least Likely To
- Start at Right Back. Assuming Ball plays four at the back, I can see Robertson being used as an impact sub to mix things up a bit.
CONCLUSION
Sean is a hard one to judge, because despite being 25 he has only played about 70 games of first team football, and never really made it at anywhere. Whether its injuries, homesickness or just bad luck hopefully he can make a big impact here. His profile fits the sort of player we have been missing for a while and his versatility should allow for greater tactical flexibility. At the end of the day, if Jimmy Ball is happy, I am happy.
