Dan discusses the departing Dean Moxey
TALKING MOX
They say form is temporary but class is permanent.
I think I speak for everyone at TorquayTalk and all the yellow army when I say what we witnessed with Dean Moxey was just pure class. What a player!
For so many years we’ve always been blessed with a diverse squad made up usually of players on the rise season starting their journey and career with us, pros coming for a final swansong who just want to play football and just players that know their level and find a home at Torquay United FC
On paper you would say Deano come for the final swansong, a final hurrah before calling timing on a glittering career. What transpired was a player of high quality that season in and season out did the job. And most of us would say the majority of the time was the best player on the pitch and by some distance!
When he joined you knew he was going to be quality as he was ex-Premier League, he had an abundance of appearances for good top flight clubs and above all he was in shape and knew the area with his Exeter connection.
In most circumstances, let’s not beat about the bush, you would say there would be a little bit of reservation about an Exeter City player coming to play for Torquay United. However, when it came to the Mox there was an instant exception made for him as you knew how good he was and he was willing to come and do a job for us.
I think no-one expected us to have him do a job for us for over five years. So as the years went by, he almost became one of our own and I can confirm he is one of our own!
He is a club legend. It’s simple Mox, we are all going to miss you! The class you have shown on and off the pitch has been nothing short of exemplary!
When times were good you kept it in check and kept people grounded and when times were tough you stood up and you were counted.
Dartford (a) last year when it got toxic and horrible. You and Asa came over, you spoke to the fans and you reassured the upset ones that all was being done to make things right. Only you and Asa that day were the right people to speak to the fans, because that is how much of a high regard we put you in.
Coming back to things on the pitch I am very confident when I say, I don’t think I have ever seen anyone so comfortable and controlled on the ball ever to wear the Yellow Jersey.
When it felt like we were under pressure or danger was coming towards our goal, you were like a fire blanket just coming over and extinguishing the situation. This was 2 or 3 times a game, every game!

Even in the trickiest of situations your wealth and experience would come through, and just the simple touch or shift of your body position would confuse the opposition, we would retain the ball and you would get the team moving and going again.
It wasn’t just your defending that was immense but going forward also, the long throw ins, your balls into the box and crosses were just sublime.
Even on the final day of THIS season at Hemel you are sliding balls into the box between the defenders and keeper and causing panic. You did it again when you came on against Boreham Wood.
You just have the knack of always doing the right things at the right time. One absolute Giant of a player!
With you Deano we have had the highest highs and the lowest lows. I am so sorry you were not walking around Plainmoor in 2 weeks time after getting us promotion, it’s the least you deserved for all you did for us.
Thank you will never be enough. But THANK YOU. We are going to miss your calm and composure! If someone would have asked me to name a footballer who lets his feet do the talking it would be you! Sheer class.
It’s been really difficult to write this and not make it sound like a soppy love letter, however if it comes across that way, I am more than comfortable with that! Haha
I’m going to miss the chants of Deano Deano Deano. I think especially on Away Days we may just crack it out and chant it to pay homage!
From all the Yellow Army and Torquay Talk, we thank you Deano!
Good luck and we want you to always call Plainmoor your home.
PS: I would very much like to see a Testimonial Game held for you at Torquay United in the same way we had Wes & Norman’s testimonials. A game vs Exeter with you playing a half each for each team and some other players you played with being there would be special. It’s what you and your family deserve!
