The Ed discusses the Bryn Consortium takeover
BRYN IT ON…
Before that Clarke Osborne statement, people would often mention about the need for new ownership and whilst most would agree it was necessary, would anyone would be able to step in and save Torquay United? This was a club after all that had been running up debts under CO, and was looking less and less sustainable as the team struggled on the pitch in a regional league. There was very little indication that the question of ‘who’s up next’ would be tested, but then it suddenly happened!
Just under 3 months later we have the final answer, as Michael Westcott and the Bryn Consortium get the final go-ahead to take the reins, and I am honestly delighted by this conclusion. These are true Torquay United supporters, people who feel what we feel for our beloved club. They will walk amongst us, understand our beliefs and our worries, celebrate when we celebrate, hurt when we hurt. Our club will have passion in spades from the very top and that can have a positive ripple effect to everyone at TUFC.
The incoming appointment of Neil Warnock only adds to the optimism of what the Bryn Consortium are bringing to the table. Torquay United have lacked football knowhow at the top of the club since Colin Lee left, and it’s shown ever since as the club have gradually slipped down the league pyramid. Gary Johnson made up for this in his early years at the club, but we leaned on him entirely. A set-up that brings together someone of Warnock’s experience alongside a youthful coach would bring back memories of the fruitful Lee/Buckle partnership, and that could be a winning formula for United.
What else? Well the consortium is made up of successful local businessman and the ultimate challenge of sustainability is something they are ready to face head on. Networking with their local contacts will be important, so will engagement with supporters and imagination to change old practices at Torquay United in all areas. The club has changed very little in years to matchday options and arrangements, but with extra revenue required, all avenues should be explored, with research made into what other clubs are doing.
The initial push for financing will I believe also include a Community Share Scheme where supporters will be able to buy shares in Torquay United. This was mentioned in the initial TUST partnership communications, and is still on the table. The Yellow Army responded brilliantly when Osborne left and I’m sure there will be many eager to be involved with their club in this process. We have a big loyal following at TUFC, and with new custodians ready to work alongside their fellow supporters and the TUST, this is a perfect opportunity to put a share scheme into practice.
Of course, success will be mainly based on footballing results. Neil Warnock and the new head coach will have their work cut out this summer, this is after all a squad that needs 20 new players signed on within 2-3 months, and then organised into a cohesive football team! But this is exciting. This is passionate local people who are ready to learn lessons from the past, and push away ‘them and us’ attitudes from Osborne/Edwards. They will be with us all the way on this new adventure and do everything they can to make us proud. This is a great chance to move Torquay United forward together. BRING IT ON!

Great all round news of our beloved club and a real chance to climb the “Pyramid” again and eventually be back where most of us believe we should be.
I choose to comment on these sites as opposed to “Fans Forums”as I still find it difficult to come to terms with some “supposed supporters” who would have us believe that appointments of “football people” such as Neil Warnock are somehow negative !!!
Let’s hope for advice from more “Football people”and the steady climb of our team to where they belong.
Cmon you gulls
