WIMBORNE TOWN 0-3 TORQUAY UNITED – MATCH SUMMARY
United avoided a cup upset with a straightforward 3-0 victory away to Wimborne Town. In truth it could have been more with three goals chalked off for offside and another hitting the bar.
Take nothing away from Wimborne though who battled hard all game and probably deserved to at least get a goal for their efforts. With all the pre-match focus centering around former yellow Tim Sills and his Wimborne side,
It was them who had the first chance of the game in only the 3rd minute, good play into the box from Wimborne’s forwards called Lovett into action and he produced a great reaction save to keep the score level.
3 minutes later United had the ball in the back of the net but the linesman had other ideas; flagging for an offside. Lapslie had laid the ball off for Stobbs who put a cracking ball in for Ash at the back post, but it was almost a carbon copy of last week’s disallowed goal against Chelmsford, as the Lino had his flag raised.
It wasn’t long before United took the lead though, in the 16th minute a corner from Stobbs was collected by Lapslie who played it back out to Stobbs on the right wing, his cross eventually found McGavin via Ash on the edge of the box and he passed it into the bottom corner with the keeper beaten. 1-0 Torquay.
On the 19th minute it was time for another disallowed goal. Stobbs’ free kick was floated over to the far post finding Jarvis who headed home, but the linesman once again had his flag up for offside.
United were controlling much of the play and they soon made it 2-0, Jarvis picked the ball up on the half way line and played Stobbs through on goal, he took a couple touches to settle himself and then lifted it over the keeper to make it two!
That was pretty much the last of the action for the first half and United went in at half time two goals to the good and deservedly so.
Wimborne started the second half at a frantic pace and had their best spell in the game for the first 10-15 mins, their Number 10 impressing the most. United were a little sluggish and seemed to be sitting off Wimborne. United managed to ride the storm and on the 59th min McGavin delivered a defence splitting pass which found Stobbs, his ball across found Jarvis who inexplicably put the ball wide with the goal at his mercy.
Substitutions aplenty disrupted the flow of the game as Ash made way for Collins, Jarvis for Pearce and Hanson for Donnellan.
Wimborne’s impressive No.10 was once again busy and looking a threat as he picked the ball up and drove towards United’s box, his shot was luckily deflected up and over the bar.
2-0 can sometimes feel like a dangerous score line and on the 81st min Torquay put the game beyond doubt, a lovely ball through found Lapslie who lifted the ball over the keeper, and with the help of a deflection off the keeper the ball dropped just under the bar and into the net, 3-0 United and game over!
There was still time for a third and final disallowed goal, Collins found Stobbs with an exquisite through ball, his first touch took him past the keeper and his second was to put the ball in the back of the net, but it wasn’t to be as the Linesman had his flag raised.
Injury time saw United’s last chance of the game; good work from Lapslie found Collins on the edge of the area who unleashed his shot from 20 yards, beating the goalkeeper but not the crossbar as it rebounded out and Wimborne cleared their lines.
Full time and a deserved 3-0 win, professional performance from the yellows and in the hat for the next round!

PLAYER RATINGS
22. GK: Rhys Lovett – 7
Made some good saves when called upon, commanded his box well.
6. CB: Ross Marshall – 7
Ross won his battles and marshalled the defence well.
23. CB: Ollie Tomlinson – 7
Coped well with Wimborne’s physicality.
21. LB: Dean Moxey – 7
Standard reliable Deano, not a huge amount of pace on Wimborne’s wings so wasn’t troubled.
7. RB: Ryan Hanson – 6
Didn’t look particularly comfortable at right back but will be grateful for the 80 minutes in his legs.
27. RW: Jack Stobbs – 8
Constant thorn in Wimborne’s side, on another day could have had 2 goals and 3 assists had it not been for the Linesman’s flag. Well taken goal.
14. MF: Brett McGavin – 7
Wimborne allowed him too much space which allowed him to dictate play from his deep lying midfield position, scored a good goal.
4. MF: Tom Lapslie – 7.5
Typical energetic Tom Lapslie performance capped off with a well-taken goal.
18. LW: Will Jenkins Davies – 7
Busy game from Will, plenty of good footwork on display,
11. ST: Bradley Ash – 6
Not Brad’s day today, struggled to carve out any real chances for himself other than the disallowed goal.
9. ST: Aaron Jarvis – 6.5
Likewise to Ash, not a game full of chances for Jarvo, missed an absolute sitter in the second half, good assist for Stobbs goal.
Subs
16. RB: Shaun Donnellan – 6
Don’t think he touched the ball more than a couple times.
10. ST: Lewis Collins – 7
Unlucky not to get a goal and assist in the half hour he was on the pitch.
19. ST: Luke Pearce – 6
Struggled to impose himself on the game and didn’t really look any better than Wimborne’s level, remain to be convinced by him.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Jack Stobbs
Decent delivery from free kicks and open play, took his goal well and had it not been for the Linesman’s flag and Jarvis’ poor finish he’d have had 3 assists and 2 goals.
THE OFFICIALS
No real contentious decisions, seemed to get most calls right, hard to say whether the offside goals were or weren’t offside but there wasn’t many complaints from the players.
TACTICS
4-1-3-2 with McGavin sitting deep with a three of Stobbs, Jenkins-Davis and Lapslie in behind Ash and Jarvis. Hanson slotted in at right back presumably with the news that Dylan Crowe had been loaned out to Havant he will deputise for Donnellan as and when required.

THE OPPOSITION
Worked hard for each other and in their Number 10 they have a pacey energetic midfielder who will do well at their level! Great to see Tim Sills come over at the end and thank the travelling fans for coming, wish Tim and Wimborne all the best for the rest of the season, great set-up!
CONCLUSION
Professional performance from United and in the hat for the next round, did the basics well and dictated the majority of the game, hopefully Jarvis coming off after a nasty knock to the head was just a precaution and no other injuries picked up!

Strange isn’t it when many of your mates who don’t support United say “what a great start you’ve had to the season”🤔🙄
Never mind the moaners “7 out of 10”👍🤗😂
