Dan names his Gulls dream team

GOALKEEPER

NEVILLE SOUTHALL

The best keeper we have had and possibly will ever have at Plainmoor. Incredible career and even in the twilight of his career with us, he pulled out saves I have never seen done for us!

STATS – 1998-2000 – APPEARANCES 61

CENTRE BACKS

MATT ELLIOTT

An absolute class player at the back. Rarely saw him make a mistake and was always in the right place at the right time.

STATS – 1989-92 – APPEARANCES 158 – GOALS 20

DARREN MOORE

What a player. I mean he was fantastic at the back for us. Commanding in the box and got his head on the end of everything.

STATS – 1992-95 – APPEARANCES 124 – GOALS 11

WES SAUNDERS (C)

As a youngster I would see this man give his all every time he put the shirt on. That iconic posture of Terry Butcher in an England Shirt with blood over it, that’s what I think of Wes Saunders for Torquay!

STATS – 1990-93 – APPEARANCES 74 – GOALS 11

WING BACKS

LWB – PAUL GIBBS

One half of the best wing back combination I’ve seen at the club. Going forward and defending he was outstanding.

STATS – 1997-98 – APPEARANCES 51 – GOALS 10

RWB – ANDY GURNEY

The other half of the Dynamic Duo. The engine of a machine, don’t think I ever saw him not running down the flank, defending or attacking. The balance the team had with Gibbs & Gurney down the flanks was a pleasure to watch.

STATS – 1997-99 – APPEARANCES 78 – GOALS 11

MIDFIELDERS

KEVIN HILL

What a servant to the club. Such a great player that got around the pitch and would give it his all each game, loved watching him play.

STATS – 1997-2008 – APPEARANCES 474 – GOALS 57

ASA HALL

In years to come we will look back and say what a servant to the club. Such a class player and person, and the goals he produced in the last few games this season is just mind blowing.

STATS – 2018-PRESENT – APPEARANCES 164 – GOALS 40

ATTACKERS

RODNEY JACK

The most explosive player I’ve seen at the club, what a beautiful footballer. You would pay just to see him play. Outstanding football.

STATS – 1995-98 – APPEARANCES 105 – GOALS 28

DAVID GRAHAM

Wish he had him so much longer but that was never going to happen because he was so good. Lovely footballer and a great goal-scorer.

STATS – 2001-04 – APPEARANCES 137 – GOALS 49

JUSTIN FASHANU

What a player. His touch on the ball was a joy to watch, he would glide around the pitch and most games when he was on the pitch he was the best player by miles. It hurts and means more because of what happened to him and what we went though. We should celebrate and be proud he played for our club because he was one hell of a footballer and we should never forget that.

STATS – 1991-93 – APPEARANCES 46 – GOALS 17

THE LINE-UP

SUBS

ALEX WATSON – CB – 1995-2001

DEAN MOXEY – LB/CB – 2020-PRESENT

TOM KELLY – LB/MF – 1986-89 & 1993-96

KEVIN HODGES – MF – 1992-97

CHRIS WADDLE – MF – 1998

GARETH HOWELLS – GK – 1990-92

THE MANAGER

LEROY ROSENIOR

I think we have played the most attractive football and progressive football I’ve seen play under him. Class off the pitch also and always wanted to play the right way! His teams kept the ball on the deck and played attractive football.

STATS – 2002-06 – TOTAL GAMES 184, WON 59, DRAWS 59, LOST 66 – 32.07% WIN RATE

  1. It’s a shame that you don’t go back farther but I was privileged to watch Robin Stubbs, Tony Currie, John Bond, Lee Sharpe, Ken Brown , John Smith and Alan Welsh.
All class acts in my opinion
