TALKING POINTS

Dom discusses talking points ahead of the NL game

AND NOW THE END IS NEAR..

We may have a number of fixtures left on the calendar but the grim Daggers loss pretty much confirmed, that barring miracles, we’d be returning to the NLS in 2023, just 4 years after we’d hoped never to play in it again. Supporting the Gulls this season has been a constant punch to the guts, and losing the last 4 home games in exactly the same way is absolutely painful, even by Torquay United’s high standards. I am obsessive about this club and it’s games, and this season will stick in my memory banks for years to come, utter torture. The blame should not be pigeon holed, it should be aimed around the club – the owners, the management and the players, there is plenty to go around for putting us through this. Anyway that leads me onto Boreham Wood (a). Even when we were good, Boreham away never gave us any cheer (apart from a Trophy win in early Jan 2021) and I honestly have no reason to believe our fortunes will change this time around. It won’t be postponed at least…

THE LINE-UP

Kieron Evans took a knock in the first half on Saturday, so could be a doubt for this game. It seems to be our way in recent years to keep players on and risk further injury. Asa Hall managed 88 minutes against Daggers and did as well as can be expected in midfield, I doubt the skipper will make the starting XI at Boreham. That could mean a full debut for Frank Nouble, who was reasonably lively and unlucky not to score, and the always frustrating Brett McGavin coming back in alongside Kevin Dawson (Lapslie still suspended). I also wonder how fit Dean Moxey is, he did his bit defensively but could barely run by the second half, maybe Ben Wyatt will replace the veteran.

AARON JARVIS

Who has elevated their status as a footballer this season at Plainmoor? Well Mark Halstead has done well after a hopeless first season, but it’s Aaron Jarvis who has properly made inroads in his career and despite United’s awful season, he has continued to impress. Aaron’s first touches were good from the off on Saturday and when he got one opportunity to find the back of the net he took it. An perfect arrowing shot that gave the keeper no chance. If he can keep developing and working on his game, then there’s no reason why an impact in the EFL isn’t possible. Boreham’s defence is always uncompromising and he’ll have a battle on his hands from the first minute, but maybe he can add another goal to his collection and enhance his growing reputation further (and also get us a bigger fee for him in the summer!).

THE OPPOSITION

Luke Garrard is the sort of manager Torquay United should have been craving for. A young guy who can come in, freshen up matters, put his firm blueprint into the club and churn out good results season after season. The Wood are again doing well, with another cup run in the bag and a play-off place looking very possible. As normal. the Wood’s success is built on a miserly defence that has conceded only 32 goals in 38 games, which is the best in the league. Attacking wise they have only scored the same as United (44), but when you’re keeping numerous clean sheets that doesn’t matter.

8 GAMES LEFT

8 games remain and I doubt we’ll win one of them, such has been the ongoing shambles of 22-23 Torquay United. With owners that do not want to talk to supporters, hide behind #OneCommunity hashtags, whilst failing to make the right decisions to help our season; a manager who gets sadder to watch week by week, and a squad of players who somehow find ways to throw away games, we should not expect anything. It’s hugely frustrating seeing the nightmare of 2018 repeated all over again at a club that should be nowhere near regional football. The concerns over what the summer and beyond will bring at Torquay United are very much alive and kicking in troubled supporters minds, and without doubt these are uncertain and worrying times all round.

  1. Am beginning to lose heart like you but still hope for a bit of luck and a hard working, organised performance🙄what is so galling is that all four of last home games were genuinely winnable and we get ….nothing!
Even with a half decent performance I can’t see more than one point, and if we are really poor….heaven help us🙁
    Cmon you Gulls!
