ON THIS DAY
GULLS MEMORIES FROM THIS DAY IN TIME
1984 – A DEBUT FOR KENNY ALLEN
Popular goalkeeper Kenny Allen joined United in 1984, and took over in goal from Gull’s Nest boss John Turner! His debut was a 2-1 defeat away to Hartlepool and he went onto play 158 games for the Gulls in two spells (1984-85 & 1986-88), featuring in the infamous ‘Bryn’ relegation saving game and the play-off run in 1988, before being released by Cyril Knowles that summer.

2018 – SOLIHULL MOORS 1-1 TORQUAY UNITED
Adi Yussuf’s late equaliser helped Solihull rescue a much-needed point against fellow strugglers Torquay.
Brett Williams put the visitors ahead with a penalty before half-time after Solihull’s Fiacre Kelleher brought down Elliott Romain in the box. But the home side equalised eight minutes from time when Jamey Osborne’s free-kick was headed on by Liam Daly and found Yussuf who struck. The result leaves both teams in the National League relegation zone, with the hosts three points from safety, and the Gulls five points further adrift.
Torquay XI: Dorel, Davis, Barnes, McGinty, Sokolik, Balatoni, Young, O’Sullivan (Klukowski), Young, Romain (Keating), Williams (Healey) Subs Not Used: Clarke, Reid Booked: O’Sullivan. Davis
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Ex-Gulls midfielder Alex Russell turns 50 today! Alex first joined United 2001 under Roy McFarland, and soon became a fans favourite with his passing skills and calmness in possession. He was a key man in the fabulous Leroy Rosenior 2004 promotion team, and then had another impressive season in League One, despite the Gulls’ eventual relegation. Alex left for Bristol City 2005, leaving a massive hole in the team that took years to fill.
