OPPOSITION Q&A – Wealdstone FC by Roger Slater

OPPOSITION Q&A

Roger discusses his team ahead of the NL game

HAPPY WITH THE SEASON SO FAR

Yes, of course. Points per £ we’re streets ahead of everyone in the division. A point and a place above our finish last year would have been progress, but aside from a spell of injuries which saw us on a losing run and the odd blip, we’ve been outstanding.

HIGHLIGHTS

Oldham away. Beating them on their own patch was special and our second goal was a thing of beauty. The late winner at York, beating Dagenham at home, winning at Gateshead and Altrincham…. Wins are always special, but there were so many tipsters in the summer that had us rooted to the bottom of the table, every three pointer has put two fingers up to the “experts”.

RECENT FORM

Three wins and two draws from the last six. Not top of the form table, but the draws were at Woking and Chesterfield, so perhaps on the better side. Then of course we took a shoeing at Halifax after losing three of the back four in 24 hours.

KEY PLAYERS

Any XI that start. The way we play, they’re all involved from Sam at the back to Micah, Ola and Corey up front. That second goal at Oldham – 23 passes and I think four were from Sam Howes in goal. We’re not afraid to go backwards if it’s the best option, moving the ball (and the personnel) to create an opening.

THE MANAGEMENT TEAM

It’s not just Stuart Maynard and Matty Saunders. They may set the style, tactics and the tone, but each of the eight members of the management team know their job and each one plays their part. Most of all, they are a “team” that the players respect. Praise has to go to Rachel, Kenny, Michael, Brett, Jason and Craig too.

STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES

Strengths have to be the squad and their belief in each other and the management, the style we play, and the ability of the management to tweak it mid-game if it’s not working. Weaknesses, perhaps the depth of squad if we get a lot of injuries (as we did earlier in the season), and finances.

PLAY-OFF CONTENTION

We have a chance, certainly. There are a few tough games ahead (most are in this division) but with eleven games to go, I think another seventeen or eighteen points may be enough. No reason we can’t get them if we keep everyone fit.

CORIE ANDREWS

He looks fitter and better with every game, as three goals in five testify. He has the tools to be a fans favourite and a defenders nightmare……

BEST OPPOSITION

The obvious; Langstaff, Daly, Scott-Morris, Kabamba and Dallas. We can afford all of them. Sorry, that should have said we can afford pictures of all of them……

PREDICTION

I think it’ll be an open game, we have enough about us to win but you guys are fighting for survival, so just about anything is possible. Purely on a personal level, I’d be well pleased if we win on Saturday then you guys win six on the bounce and stay up. I need one local game a season……
