ON THIS DAY
GULLS MEMORIES FROM THIS DAY IN TIME
1998 – 8 WINS IN A ROW
A club record 8th consecutive league win is achieved with a 1-0 victory at Plainmoor against Cardiff. The run started on 24th January with a 3-0 triumph over Shrewsbury, included a 5-1 thrashing of Hull City, and a Kevin Hill goal just before half time, was enough to make it 8 Division 3 wins in a row. Cambridge finished the streak with a 3-0 win at Plainmoor. Kevin Hodges’ men had a memorable season, with loan signing Jason Roberts helping to ignite a play-off push and Rodney Jack proving one of the best ever players to represent the Gulls.

2012 – CRAWLEY TOWN 0-1 TORQUAY UNITED
Torquay leapt above Crawley to strengthen their promotion push as Eunan O’Kane bagged the only goal at Broadfield Stadium.
The Irish midfielder sealed the Gulls’ eighth win in 10 games when he drilled home a low shot from close range following a cross by Rene Howe 11 minutes from time. Torquay goalkeeper Robert Olejnik came to his side’s rescue after only 10 seconds when he blocked a goalbound shot from former Blackpool striker Billy Clarke. Striker Ryan Jarvis, on loan from Walsall, was introduced for his Torquay debut with just 23 minutes gone after Danny Stevens fell awkwardly and was stretchered off with a leg injury. Town, now without a win in their last four league games, struggled to create many clear-cut openings. Substitute Josh Simpson fired wide soon after the break before John Akinde, who had earlier headed off target at the far post, rifled a low drive into the side-netting. Olejnik dived to his left to parry a goalbound drive from Clarke, who later shot wide when well placed.
Torquay XI: Olejnik, Oastler, Ellis, MacDonald, Nicholson, Morris (Rowe Turner 88), O’Kane, Lathrope, Mansell, Stevens (Jarvis 23), Howe Subs Not Used: Craig, Rice, Atieno Booked: MacDonald, Oastler
HIGHLIGHTS
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy birthday to Craig Stanley who is 40 today. Midfielder Stanley joined United on loan from Morecambe, initially for one month, but having impressed Paul Buckle, he ended up staying for the rest of the season. His all-round game quickly endeared Stanley to the Yellow Army, and it was disappointing when he joined the ex-Gulls brigade with Buckle at Bristol Rovers the following summer.
