ON THIS DAY
GULLS MEMORIES FROM THIS DAY IN TIME
1993 – NEIL WARNOCK ARRIVES AT PLAINMOOR
When Torquay United found themselves in bother in early 1993, Mike Bateson called upon ex-Notts County manager Neil Warnock to help them avoid a second successive relegation from the 3rd Division (the league pyramids had been renamed and rejigged in 1992 with the arrival of the Premier League)! Unsurprisingly Warnock delivered. His squad included the likes of Paul Trollope and Darren Moore, and safety was confirmed on a jubilant away day at Carlisle, in what was the penultimate game of the 1992-93 season. Warnock went onto have a hugely successful managerial career, achieving 8 promotions and breaking the record games managed in English professional football, he also kept a soft spot for the Gulls and loaned a number of players this way. Neil retired last year after 42 years in various dugouts…and then returned this week at Huddersfield on a short term contract. Good luck Neil!

2014 – CHESTERFIELD 3-1 TORQUAY UNITED
League Two leaders Chesterfield came from behind to beat Torquay 3-1 at the Proact Stadium through two late goals from Jay O’Shea.
Chesterfield almost scored in the third minute when O’Shea got in on the right but his angled drive came back off the underside of the bar and Torquay settled to create an opening for Anthony O’Connor which he volleyed wide. The rest of the first half was forgettable but the game came to life in the 50th minute when Goodwin broke from inside his own half and ran clear down the right before firing past Tommy Lee from 15 yards. Chesterfield responded by equalising six minutes later when goalkeeper Michael Poke’s clearance struck a defender and sent Doyle away to score with a low shot. Torquay should have regained the lead in the 78th minute but Conor Wilkinson shot wide from eight yards after Goodwin had struck a post and two minutes later O’Shea burst forward to score from the edge of the area before striking again deep in stoppage time.
Torquay XI: Poke, Tonge, Cruise, Mansell, Pearce, O’Connor, Goodwin, Lathrope (Downes 75), Stockley (Wilkinson 75), Chapell (Cameron 81), Labadie Subs Not Used: Rice, Nicholson, Hawley, O’Brien Booked: Stockley, Wilkinson
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Happy birthday to Sean Joyce who turns 56 today. Bustling midfielder Joyce started his career at Doncaster Rovers, and then moved to Plainmoor in 1988, playing a part in the Sherpa Van Trophy and Play-Off Wembley runs in 1989 & 1991. He dropped down to non-league football in 1993, becoming manager of Bideford AFC in 1998, a position he still holds now.
