Danny previews the upcoming week, as well as looking at events that happened on this day for the week commencing 5th September.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Saturday – TUFC v Aldershot @ Plainmoor (15.00 KO)

The Gulls return to Plainmoor desperate for their first three points in front of the Yellow Army. 7 points from 7 games see Torquay sit in 16th position at this early stage of the season.

The visitors have had a slow start to the season, but did pick up their second win of the campaign against Barnet on home soil.

Saturday – Cirencester Town Youth U18’s v TUFC Youth U18’s @ Corinium Stadium (10.30 KO)

Ryan Dicksons’ first competitive game in charge of the U18’s see’s them travel to Cirencester. The young Gulls will be looking to continue their form after last season’s exploits.

Sunday – Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies v TUWFC @ Gerard Buxton Sports Ground (14.00 KO)

Fresh from their disappointing 3-0 loss over Sherborne, the ladies travel to Wiltshire to face RWB ladies. They finished 2 places behind the Gulls in 6th place last campaign.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Former Gull’s defender Jamie Sendles-White made the switch from Plainmoor to Aldershot, via Crawley. Last season’s wonderkid Sinclair Armstrong had a loan spell at both clubs in the 21/22 campaign, he scored two for each side. Ex-Yellows frontman Scott Rendell made over 110 appearances for the Hampshire side over a 4 year period. Gulls & Shots legend Tim Sills has made a combined total of over 200 appearances for the two clubs.

BIRTHDAYS

Bruce Rioch – The former player-manager had a 3 year spell at Torquay. He celebrates his 75th birthday on Tuesday.

Wayne Carlisle – Instrumental in the Play-Off final win at Wembley, the former winger turns 43 on Friday.

Tim Sills – Born just one day after Wayne, Sillsy will celebrate the same age on Saturday.

Dan Martin – The flying wing back will celebrate his 23rd birthday on Saturday. 3 points ocer Aldershot will be a nice present!

Danny Wright – A fan favourite in his 2 year spell at Plainmoor, the now Havant striker will turn 38 on Saturday.

ON THIS DAY

8th September 2018 – United lose 1-0 at home to Chippenham, a game which proves to be Gary Owers last in charge.

9th September 1995 – A 16-year-old Tony Bedeau makes his debut as a substitute away at Cardiff.

10th September 1932– United destroy Southend 8-1 at Plainmoor, with Stabb and Hutchinson bagging hat-tricks.

7th September 1931 – Torquay record their joint heaviest defeat, a 2-10 defeat handed to them by Fulham.

Starting Line-Up: Poke, Robertson, Ellis, Woods, Hodges, Carayol, Mansell, Hargreaves, Carlisle, Benyon, Green

Paul Buckle’s men were in real danger of making 6 without victory as Northwich Victoria came to town. Carlisle opened the scoring in the first half, before a second half equaliser by the visitors. United secured a last gasp winner as substitute Tim Sills netted from the penalty spot. It would be December before the Gulls tasted defeat again.
