Wednesday 12th January 1955 – FA Cup Third Round Replay

Venue: Plainmoor

United line up: Jefferies, Towers, H. Smith, Lewis, Webber, Norman, Shaw, Collins, Dobbie, Mills, J. Smith

Torquay brought Division Two Leeds United back to Plainmoor after a 2-2 draw 4 days earlier at Elland Road. Leeds were captained by John Charles, who would later move to Juventus for a then world record £65,000 and managed by Raich Carter. The Devon side were having a fairly unremarkable season in Division Three (South), but wins over Cambridge & Blyth Spartans in the earlier rounds set up this bumper tie.

Over 12,000 packed into Plainmoor for this Wednesday afternoon replay. Floodlights were yet to be installed at Plainmoor, hence the weekday afternoon kick off, but deter the Torquay folk it did not. Player-manager Eric Webber selected himself and was assigned the difficult task of marking the Welsh international John Charles.

Torquay’s fantastic inside-right Sammy Collins opened the scoring, before an OG from Leeds’ Dunn made it 2. Dobbie & Mills completed the rout to give United a remarkable and memorable 4-0 win. Highlights of the original tie at Elland Road is below.
