The Gulls Week – w/c 2nd Aug
Three friendlies down, three to go. The Gulls’ pre-season preparations continue to ramp up with another Tuesday-Saturday workout against lower league opposition. GJ continues to run the rule over the remaining trialists and whether we see anymore remains to be seen, as him and Downesy look set to cement their team prior to Game day 1 later this month.
What’s happening this week……
Pre-season week 3 commences as the management team look to see improvements in fitness levels across the team. Where fitness is key in the first couple of friendlies, good performances and results will look to be gained across the next couple of weeks.
Tuesday – Tiverton v TUFC @ Ian Moorcroft Stadium
A short trip up the M5 for the Gulls as we face familiar opponents Tiverton Town (7.45pm KO). With this being their second and last away pre-season fixture, Tivvy will no doubt prove another tough test for the Yellows. Like our previous opponents Poole, Tiverton ply their trade in the Southern League Premier (south), and Scott Rogers will be the man to guide them as Town announced last week long standing servant Martin Rogers will be stepping down from his role as joint-manager after serving on and off at the club for circa 30 years. Ex-Gull Defender Gary Warren has played a big part in pre-season and will look to provide solidarity in defence, alongside former TUFC left back, Craig Woodman. Torquay’s last trip to the Ladysmead in July 2019 as it’s better known, resulted in a 1-0 win courtesy of an Armani Little penalty.
Saturday – TUFC v Chippenham @ Plainmoor
2 weeks until the real stuff gets going, Torquay host Chippenham in their penultimate friendly of the season. Somewhat of a boggy team for United, ‘The Bluebirds’ have won the previous 3 encounters between the two, having concluded the double over us in the NL south title campaign, as well as a 2-0 pre-season win at an empty Plainmoor in September 2020. Chippenham will battle it out in the NL South this season, having finished 16th after 14 games in the cut short campaign last season.
Sunday – TUFC Women v Yeovil Utd Women U23’s
Grant Fisher’s ladies travel to Somerset to face Yeovil United W.F.C U23’s in their 4th warm up game of pre-season. The Ladies hammered Signal Box Oak Villa Ladies 12-1, before taking on Liverton Ladies last Sunday (not WBA as previously indicated last week, apologies Ladies!).
Shamir Fenelon (was Goodwin) – 27
Ex-Gulls loanee Shamir Fenelon turns 27 on Tuesday. Fenelon, who was known as Shamir Goodwin whilst at Plainmoor, was loaned to United from Brighton in the 2013/14 season.
Taiwo Atieno – 36
The former Kenyan international turns 36 on Friday. Atieno played for United in the 2011-12 season netting 6 league goals, most notably at Rovers in the 2-1 ‘Buckle derby’ win.
Leon Hapgood – 42
Leon celebrates his 42nd Birthday on Saturday. The Torquay born midfielder is now a Technical Director at Calgary Foothills Soccer Club in Canada.
Kieffer Moore – 29
A man who played so little for Torquay, but left such a lasting impression. The Torquay born Wales international turns 29 on Sunday.
On this day……

The Gulls kick off their 2019/20 season with a 2-1 home win over Boreham Wood. Goals from Opi Edwards & Jamie Reid seal the victory.

8th Aug 2009
Torquay win their first game back as a Football League team, after their promotion in May. Goals from Scott Rendell & Lee Mansell secure a 2-0 win over Chesterfield.
8th Aug 1998
Local lad Robbie Herrera makes his first appearance as a ‘full’ TUFC player after his £35,000 signing from Fulham. He had previously been on loan at Plainmoor from QPR.
2nd Aug 1967
During the clubs first continental tour, the Gulls draw 1-1 with German side Bayern Leverkusen. Robin Stubbs is on target for the tourists.
