THE GULLS WEEK

Fresh from their first pre-season outing in Dorset, the Gulls preparations step up a notch as they head into week 2 of training. A useful work out at the Southern League Prem (South) outfit, the management and fans alike were able to get a first glimpse of the new signings GJ has brought in over the summer, along with the mainstays from last year’s agonising PO final defeat.

What’s happening this week……

Monday

The players return for week 2 of training and preparations ramp up as they prepare for back to back home friendlies.

Tuesday – TUFC V Truro @ Plainmoor

The Gulls return to fortress Plainmoor for the first time since THAT Notts County triumph on 12th June, and the first time they are able to welcome an unlimited capacity since February 2019! Our Cornish Neighbours Truro City are in town (19.45 KO), and will for sure provide a stern test for the new Gulls as our friendly cross-border rivalry is renewed.

Former tenants of Plainmoor, the Southern League side’s season was curtailed in October 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, with them sitting in 4th after just 8 games. Torquay boast a good record against the White Tigers, having completed the double over them in our NLS title winning campaign, and numerous pre-season victories, not least the 6-0 drubbing at the start of the 2017/18 (see Ryan Higgins belter). Truro will be hoping to bounce back into the NL South, and will undoubtedly be one of the favourites for promotion, with former Pilgrim Paul Wootton at the helm. Ex-Gulls Ryan Dickson & Ed Palmer could play big parts this coming season.

Saturday – TUFC V Plymouth Argyle @ Plainmoor

An exciting Saturday could ensue and no doubt a big crowd will be on display as League One and local rivals Plymouth Argyle travel to the Bay for United’s third pre-season game of the season. No strangers to each other in pre-season, United’s last outing against the Greens resulted in a 3-1 victory. Reid, Kalala and an Armani Little free kick masterclass gave Gulls the bragging rights that evening. Plymouth will no doubt have United’s YPOTS on show in Adam Randell, as he looks to cement his place at Home Park, alongside former loanee Ryan Law who himself is making a name at LB. Meanwhile Klaidi Lolos will have a point to prove to his former employers.

Sunday

The end of the weekend belongs to the Torquay United Women’s team, as on Sunday they travel to the Black Country to play their second pre-season game of the season against West Brom. The Ladies have made a number of summer signings, and Grant Fisher will be hoping for a positive campaign in the South West Regional Women’s Premier.

REUBEN REID

Reuben Reid turns 33 on Monday 26th July. The former Gulls striker scored 2 goals in 7 loan appearances back in 2007, and has most recently played at Yeovil Town..

LEVI IVES

Levi Ives celebrates his 24th Birthday on Wednesday 28th July. The left back played for United in the 2014-15 season and currently plies his trade in his native Northern Ireland with Cliftonville.

DAVE CALDWELL

Scotsman Dave Caldwell turns 61 on Saturday 31st July. The forward spent two spells at Plainmoor between 1987-90 and became a firm favourite with the Yellow Army.

On this day……

28th July 2020 – In the midst of the COVID pandemic, no football is being played, no euro’s, you had to book a restaurant 5 years in advance, and it was even illegal to hug your own mother, BUT to bring a smile to the face, GJ announces the double signing of Danny Wright and Andy Nelson. One faired slightly better than the other, and is well on his way to legendary status.

28th July 2018 – The Gulls rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win at Dorchester Town. JP Pitman & James Roberts (no, me neither…) on the score-sheet. The 2018/19 season would be the Yellows first and only season in the NL South.

1st Aug 2016 – 5 days before the 2016/17 campaign kicks off, The Gulls impressively defeat Premier League West Brom 2-1 at Plainmoor. Goals from trialist Callum Hall & a great individual effort from Brett Williams were enough to give the Gulls a win. Matt Phillips replied for the visitors.

30th July 2015 – Paul Cox brings in Nathan Smith on loan from Port Vale. The centre back would go onto win both the YPOTS & POTS awards in Nicho’s great escape season.

27th July 2012 Torquay entertained Neil Warnock’s Leeds United to Plainmoor. Played in front of a near 4000 bumper crowd, United made the Championship side work hard, but ultimately succumb to a 2-1 defeat. Ross McCormack at the double for Leeds. Young Kirtys MacKenzie replied for the home side in the second half.

28th July 2009 Scott Rendell signs on a season long loan from Peterborough, and ends the season top goal-scorer (league) with 12 goals, as Torquay finish 17th in their first season back in League Two.

1st August 1995 –  A star-studded Chelsea side featuring the likes of Ruud Gullit, Eddie Newton & Gavin Peacock come to Plainmoor for a pre-season fixture. Glenn Hoddle’s men run out 5-0 winners.

29th July 1972 – The great Bobby Charlton captains Manchester United in a pre-season game at Plainmoor. Frank O’Farrells Man Utd side, which boasted the likes of Dennis Law, Brian Kidd & George Best were held 0-0 by the Gulls.

26th July 1921 – Torquay United Football Club is formed following the merger of Torquay Town & Babbacombe.

  1. Excellent blog as always. Not sure though that Best played in the 1972 friendly. Storey-Moore was on the wing?
