Joe looks at players who could be headed to Plainmoor this summer
After what must feel like one of the worst weeks in recent history for Gulls fans, it’s time to get over the disappointment of losing our first-choice goalkeeper and vice-captain and start to discuss some good old fashioned transfer speculation.
There’s no doubt that top of Gary Johnson’s shopping list will be a goalkeeper and a centre half, I’ll take a look at who could be heading down to Plainmoor this summer to plug those gaps.
James Hamon (Unattached)
The Truro stopper joined us in January on a month’s loan after Lucas suffered his injury and despite his loan finishing in February, Hamon continued training with the club and was even present at last Sunday’s final. By all accounts he is a good character to have around the changing room and with MacDonald rumoured to be following best mate Cameron out of the club, he could provide a more than adequate number 2 option, filling in as and when required.

ย
Marek Stech (Mansfield Town)
The most obvious choice for Gary’s new number one would be Marek Stech. Stech played under Gary Johnson at Yeovil back in 2012 as the Somerset side won promotion to the Championship. Having been transfer listed by Mansfield, it may be the perfect time for Stech and Johnson to link back up again.

Ryan Boot (Unattached)
A solid National League goalkeeper who finds himself a free agent this summer.ย Formerly of Solihull Moors, Boot has always impressed when we have visited Damson Park and he can count himself unlucky to have been released considering he managed an impressive 15 clean sheets in a mediocre season for the Moors. Boot also picked up the supporters’ player of the season award and could be the new man between the sticks for GJ and Downsey.

Kyle Howkins (Unattached)
As one Kyle departs, another could be on his way in. The 6 foot 5 centre half was released by Newport this month after spending the latter part of the season on loan at Solihull. Having come through the youth set-up at West Brom, Howkins had numerous loans at EFL clubs; Mansfield, Cambridge & Port Vale before signing permanently for Newport 2 years ago. After an injury blighted couple of years (calm down Kai!) GJ could be the man to get Kyle’s career back on track and he could be the perfect foil for Lewis. Perhaps Ben Whitfield, who played with Howkins at Vale, could put in a good word for us!

Patrick Almond (Sunderland)
Although the loan signing of Benji Kimpioka won’t be hailed as a success story any time soon, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Lee Johnson helps his old man out with a loan or two. Johnson called the 18-year-old promising Sunderland centre half a “Physical Beast” back in February and named him on the subs bench for a couple of games towards the end of the season. Don’t be surprised to see Almond sent down on a season long loan to carry on his development.

Ollie Younger (Sunderland)
I’ll finish with another possible Sunderland loanee; Ollie Younger, a centre half who Sunderland have high hopes for. Younger signed in 2020 from Burnley, initially for their development side but featured on the bench a number of times for the black cats towards the latter part of last season. At the age of 21 Sunderland will want him playing regular football and after our success with Sam Sherring this season we could be the perfect fit for Ollie.
