TT OPPOSITION Q&A
Tom King discusses Solihull Moors
Hi Tom so tell us a bit about yourself and how long have you supported Solihull?
My name is Tom King and I am one of the club photographers at Solihull Moors, I’ve been following the club for about 8 years now and photographing them for coming up to 5 years.
How would you summarise the teams season so far in a couple of paragraphs?
This season started well for us beating the likes of Wrexham and Boreham Wood and the dream of the promotion to the football league for the first time looked good, but since December it’s been all change with us struggling to even score goals, and looking really fragile whenever a team comes and attacks us and the dream of promotion has turned into the threat of relegation, which thankfully won’t happen anymore otherwise we’d be in trouble
How’s the teams recent form been?
The team’s recent form has been nothing short of atrocious, we haven’t won in 8 games and haven’t scored in the last 3. We’ve got rid of Jimmy Shan and bought in our ex manager Mark Yates till the end of the season to try and steady the ship.
What’s been your highlights of the season so far?
Highlights of the season so far has got to be the FA Cup run, we smashed Wrexham 4-0 at home to get a tie away at Scunthorpe on remembrance weekend, where 2 Gleeson penalties helped us take a deserved 3-2 victory for a tie in the next round at Morecambe. We eventually lost that 4-2 after extra time, where we would have had Chelsea away in the next round, but our players hadn’t played for 2 weeks prior to the Morecambe game due to Covid in the camp. Ah well, we can keep dreaming.
Who are your key players and why?
Key players this season for me are James Ball and Joe Sbarra. Both very creative midfielders who are also popping up with some vital goals for us. Unfortunately both keep picking up the odd injury so haven’t been as consistent as we’d like.
Who’s the gaffer and what tactics does he like to use?
Mark Yates is the gaffer now until the end of the season, I haven’t had the pleasure of being able to go to one of his games since he took back over us. But it looks like he’s employing a 4-5-1 which is all change from our previous manager [Jimmy] Shan who played 5-2-2-1 religiously.
Can the team still make the playoffs this season?
I think the playoffs is a hard ask now this season as I can’t see where the points are going the come from at the moment. I think it’s more about steadying the ship. Getting a new manager in the summer and hopefully pushing on next season.
Which opposition teams and players have impressed you most?
Two best teams we’ve played against this season are Hartlepool and yourselves. Hartlepool completely played us off the park in February at their place. It’s almost as if we was still in the coach for the whole 90 mins. And then when Torquay came to the moors a few weeks ago we were not really in the game at all as you are a proper footballing side. I think Asa Hall would fit in perfectly into our team and he’s what we’re crying out for in my opinion, plus he used to play down the moors week in week out when he was at Birmingham city in his youth career. So for me I’d sign him in an instant.
What have games been like with no supporters present?
Games with no supporters for me has impacted our team negatively. We’re not the most supported team in the league by any stretch but what fans turn up make such a difference to us. Especially away from home. Even though some games we might only get around 20 fans travel away, We can be heard by me the other end of the ground which always puts a smile on my face.
And finally whats your match prediction for Tuesday night?
My prediction for Tuesday night is a good one from a Torquay perspective as I really can’t see us getting a result. Shame I can’t go to the game too as away media isn’t allowed to travel! I’m going 2-0 to the hosts.
