@ExGulls gives us an update on former Yellows around the country and the world
At the end of lockdown 2.0, we saw fans returning to some grounds and luckily Plainmoor was one of them. With Alex Fletcher, the top goal scorer going into November having his league campaign halted, could the likes of John Marquis and Kieffer Moore take the limelight of him?
We also saw the end of the season for one player after the league campaign finished at the beginning of the month.
Kieffer Moore – Cardiff City and Wales
Kieffer Moore has continued this season where he left the last, by scoring goals for fun. The Torquay born, Wales international has now scored 9 goals for club and country so far this season, 1 more than Alex Fletcher.
Moore kept his great record for Wales going, scoring the third as a half time substitute for Wales in their UEFA Nations League tie against Finland. That win was massive for them as they were promoted from Group B to Group A. Moore has also scored twice for Cardiff City this month, equalising in a 1-1 draw against Millwall F.C., was amongst the goals as Cardiff City thrashed Luton Town 4-0 and scored the only goal in 1-0 win over Watford F.C.
Opi Edwards – Bristol City
Despite spending a lot of his loan spells with the physio than on the pitch, we all knew there was something in Opi Edwards whenever he was given game time. The winger who had two loan spells has taken advantage of Championship sides being able to have 9 substitutes available and has been a regular on the bench for The Robins. During their midweek defeat away to high-flying Reading F.C., Edwards made his Football League debut, replacing Jack Hunt for the final 5 minutes of the game.
John Marquis – Portsmouth F.C.
Marquis is now the top scoring ExGull this season with 10 goals. His 4 this month have put him past Kieffer Moore as he helps Portsmouth F.C. climb the League 1 table. Marquis notably started the month by scoring twice against Lincoln City. The current top scorer in League 1 has also scored in Portsmouth F.C.’s 4-1 win over Crewe Alexandra and converted a penalty in front of the Sky Sports cameras in a 2-2 draw away to Plymouth Argyle.
Ryan Bowman – Exeter City
Another striker who has enjoyed his time in front of goal is Ryan Bowman. He’s had a slow start to the season with fans getting on his back but he’s managed to turn it around by scoring a hat trick against Colchester United.
Jamie Reid – Mansfield Town
The Stags have had a new lease of life under Nigel Clough and a player who is looking to benefit is Reidy! Since Clough’s appointment, Reid has scored twice, with both of them being winning goals. His first goal for the club came in the EFL Trophy against Scunthorpe United whilst his second was his first Football League goal for the club in a 1-0 win away to high-flying Cambridge United.
Jak McCourt – Chesterfield F.C.
Midfielder Jak McCourt has returned to Chesterfield F.C. on a short-term contract. McCourt was due to start the season with the recently relegated Macclesfield Town, but with The Silkmen being liquidated back in September McCourt found himself without a club. Luckily his old club Chesterfield have signed him on and he’ll be looking to extend his current deal.
Josh McQuoid – Weymouth F.C.
After The Terras overcame their cases of COVID-19, Josh McQuoid has struck twice for them, unfortunately they were both in game they lost at home to F.C. Halifax Town and Dagenham & Redbridge. McQuoid has also announced recently, the birth of his daughter Órla. Congratulations to Josh and his partner!
Jake Robinson – Billericay Town
Robinson has had a real purple patch this month, scoring more than any other ExGull. The man who was on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion nearly 10 years ago has scored 7 goals this month, including hat trick in a 4-1 win away to Hemel Hempstead Town. Shamir Fenelon who opened his account for his new club scored the other goal.
Myles Anderson – Hampton & Richmond Borough
Elsewhere in the National League South, former defender Myles Anderson has left Weymouth F.C. to join Hampton & Richmond Borough on loan. Anderson hasn’t started it well though, scoring an own-goal in a 3-0 defeat at home to Hemel Hempstead Town.
Jared Hodgkiss – Hereford F.C.
Another player who has had a decent month in front of goal is Jared Hodgkiss. Ok, he might not be hitting the numbers like Marquis or Moore but the right back has scored twice in November for Hereford F.C. who are currently managed by another ExGull, Josh Gowling.
Hereford F.C. sit in midtable but the National League North has been badly affected by COVID-19 with a lot of games postponed due to that factor. Hereford F.C. have only played 7 games, whilst over teams like Farsley Celtic have played 11 at the time of writing.
Ruairi Keating – Gateshead F.C./ Galway United
Despite signing a new deal with The Heed at the beginning of the season, Keating has had his contract cancelled by Mutual Consent up in Tyneside. He didn’t have a significant contribution to the new season. Keating at the beginning of December returned to Galway United. They currently play in the Irish 2nd tier and finished in the play-offs in the season just gone.
Momodou Touray – Marine F.C. and Wales U21
Marine F.C. have had one amazing journey in this years F.A. Cup. With an extraordinary tie at home to Premier League Tottenham Hotspur, Touray will look to keep himself involved heading into that tie in January.
It’s also been a fantastic month for Touray as he scored for Wales U21’s in their clash against Moldova U21’s. Coming off the bench, the man who made a solo appearance for Torquay, scored late on at The Racecourse, to secure a resounding win.
Andre Wright – Bohemians F.C.
For Andre Wright and Bohemians F.C. their season has now finished. Bohemians F.C. have finished 2nd in the League of Ireland table, qualifying for the Europa Conference League first qualifying round for the next season. Wright scored 7 goals during the shortened season finishing off as the clubs second top scorer with only young striker Daniel Grant scoring more than the Englishman.
Rhys Healey – Toulouse F.C.
Onto the continent now and Rhys Healey has managed to bag his second goal for the Ligue 2 outfit. The former Cardiff City striker marked a rare start for Toulouse F.C. with a winning goal against Chamois Niort as they push towards the play-offs.
Brendan Moore – Atlanta United F.C.
Last but not least, Brendan Moore has not been offered a new deal at former MLS Champions, Atlanta United. Rarely making the bench with the likes of Brad Guzan and Alec Kann being preferred, the 5 stripes haven’t taken up the option to offer the goalkeeper a new deal. He’ll still be involved in their Scotiabank Champions League training camp but he will be enrolled into the MLS Re-Entry draft.
