TT Opposition Q&A – Aldershot Town by Rhys Emberson

“Mitch Walker is an excellent keeper and my player of the season for 2019-20″

Hi Rhys so how have you coped in this crazy year and are you optimistic for the season to come?

Hey Dom, so there have been a lot of challenges this past year, such as my office job which has become a home working job since the restrictions came into force, I’ve done a lot of work on my fitness and it’s been difficult when in lockdown as I wasn’t able to see my girlfriend. Bit of a mixed crazy year this year. As far as my optimism goes I think we’ll be alright this season. We’ve looked good for the most part after a slightly shaky start, never know what’s going to happen this season.

How have your owners dealt with the situation in terms of communicating with supporters and setting up a squad for 20-21?

So when the pandemic began the club advised us supporters everyone at the club had taken a pay cut and I believe our staff were put on furlough. Everyone came together in difficult times you can’t ask for much more. As setting up a squad goes we began signing players in July and recruited right up to an hour before the season began. I think we have a strong squad put together.

Ross McCormack was perhaps the highest profile NL signing this year, how has he settled in at Aldershot?

Ross has yet to have much of a chance to show what he can do. He started Saturday before going off after 40 mins in the FA Cup game, as well as twice coming on as a sub in our games with Dover and Eastleigh. The signing certainly took all us supporters by surprise and brought a lot of attention to the club. He’s an experienced head amongst an inexperienced squad so good for the younger players to learn from.

Apart from Ross who else joined the club pre-season?

A player you’re familiar with is probably is Jamie Sendles-White who has since become our club captain and has made a fairly good start. Josh Rees has come in and already has two goals to his name, he’s looking good going forward as an attacking option in our midfield. Shadrach Ogie is currently with us on loan from Leyton Orient after a shaky first match he’s not looked too bad, I saw him a couple of times at Dover and he looked good there. We’ve also signed Toby Edser, Joel Nouble, Chike Kandi and Killian Colombie.

Who are your key players and why?

Key players for me are Mitch Walker who is an excellent keeper at this level and personally was my player of the season for 2019-20. Mo Bettamer already has 3 goals to his name continuing on from his hard work and tally he was beginning to get before the pandemic, and Craig Tanner who has undoubtedly been a real MVP so far this season scoring twice including a cracking free kick in the 2-2 draw with Eastleigh.

Who’s the gaffer and what sort of tactics does he like to use?

Danny Searle begins his second season in charge along with assistant Anwar Uddin. Danny likes to keep possession and hold the ball. We look great going forward but need to remain clinical.

Should the Yellow Army have high expectations for the Shots stream of Tuesday night’s game?!

We were the first club to announce our streaming service was on it’s way and our pre-match coverage is excellent including studio guests such as players, board members and is presented by our all time record goal-scorer and current commercial manager Mark Butler. I can only advise on the one game I’ve seen on the streaming service (as of writing) and can say I wasn’t too impressed with the automated camera missing Mo Bettamer’s goal in our 2-1 defeat to Sutton. Overall coverage is excellent but let’s hope the camera fairs better this time. To add to this the stream Saturday was very well presented and all goals shown. Programming beginning for 6.30.

What’s your form been like so far and have any moments stood out for you?

So 1 win in 5 doesn’t look good, however we lost to Sutton and Hartlepool who’ve both made great starts, a 5-0 win at Dover saw us look strong and a 2-2 draw at Eastleigh where we were punished for not killing the game off. We score goals but need to remember games are 90 mins. Stand out moments so far are the Tanner free kick, though it’s difficult when you’re not there to experience everything in the stadium. In my opinion our only poor performance came in the derby game vs Woking this past weekend in the FA Cup – we didn’t want it as much as them despite drawing first blood.

Who do you think will be competing for promotion?

So the obvious picks of Stockport and Notts County. For me a few clubs could yet surprise people, including Solihull who will be up there and this season I think Hartlepool will be around the top 7.

And finally, what’s your match prediction for Tuesday night?

I think we’ll win 2-1 as we’re due a home league win, maybe we’ll see Ross McCormack score his first goal.
