Match Preview Q&A – Mark Hamill on Sutton United

“We are playing better football overall now than we have played for the last few years”

The opposition interview series continues, with Mark Hamill returning to discuss his team Sutton United

Hi Mark good to speak to you again, so how would you summarise Sutton’s season up to this point?

Since beating you, our season has turned around for the better. We have climbed the table and are nearing our target of 50 points to guarantee we are playing in the National League again next season. We have had more or less everybody fit and available for selection in the last 3 months and that has shown in our form and results.

What’s been your highlights and why?

The run we had through Xmas and New Year with a victory against the then league leaders Yeovil was a big highlight, and the two victories against Woking were special.

Who are your key players and why?

Key players in the last few months have been our goalkeeper Nik Tzanev on loan from AFC Wimbledon, the signing of Louis John, Omar Bugiel scoring goals and of course Harry Beautyman scoring regularly, but overall the spirit and hard work of the whole team has reflected on the results we have been getting.

This is all down to our manager Matt Gray and his assistant Jason Goodliffe who have shown with their attention to detail on everything from fitness and work on our opponents. They will change our set-up every game to suit whoever we are playing and generally it works in our favour.

Tell us about the gaffer, how does he like to set the team up?

Matt and Jason have done a great job in their first season here. After a good first month, we then had a tricky few months where we were playing okay but not getting the results and breaks we deserved, but then after beating Torquay we have gone on a great run where we have picked up many points.

I’ve got to say Matt and Jason and the whole squad are great with the supporters on matchdays in and around the ground and clubhouse. It took a while for some supporters to believe in the football that they were trying to bring to the club after the change in staff from the last few years, but we are playing better football overall now than we have played for the last few years and the supporters can see that.

The Sutton COCs

Where’s best for the Yellow Army to grab pre-match food and drinks?

Your supporters are always welcome in our bar in the main stand on matchday from 1pm and we also do a pre-match meal for £13-50 if you are interested (booked online), this starts at 12.45pm.

Which opposition teams and players have impressed you most?

The sides that have been impressive this year are Barrow, Harrogate and Yeovil, all good hard working footballing sides.

And finally, give us a match prediction for Saturday’s game versus the Gulls?

We have had good results against these sides and if we carry on our recent form we should get the 3 points against yourselves, winning by the odd goal hopefully. At the end of the day I hope you and your fans enjoy your day out at Gander Green Lane.
