Match Preview Q&A – Barrow AFC by Nathan Garnett

“This season more than ever I truly think we will go up to League Two

The opposition interview series continues, with Nathan Garnett discussing his high-flying Barrow AFC team:

Hi Nathan, before we talk about the Bluebirds tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve lived in Barrow all my life, like most kids in the 90s’ I was a massive Man Utd fan wanting to be the next Cantona or Giggs. The earliest memory I have of a Barrow game was when we beat Knowsley 7-0 in the mid 90s’.

Summarise your season so far for us?

After losing 6 games from the first nine I didn’t expect us to then be where we are now, but with the football we play I knew we’d be competing around the play-offs.

What have been your highlights up to this point?

Going to Notts County in November and beating them 3-0, I wasn’t expecting that at all, also kicking off 2020 with a 1-0 win at Fylde with around 1400 Barrow supporters!

How’s Barrow’s recent form been?

Very good. In 2020 before the goalless Solihull game, we won 5 out of 6 games scoring 20 and only conceding one.

Who are your key players and why?

Joel Dixon has been immense for us this season and kept 13 clean sheets. He has improved a lot under Ian Evatt.

What would you say have been the keys to the team’s success?

Without doubt Ian Evatt and his backroom staff. The players and supporters have bought into what Ian wants from the club and he has been backed massively by the board, something we’ve not had enough of in recent years.

Tell us about the manager?

Ian is the best manager in the NL for me, for £15 a ticket you won’t be disappointed with the football he has the team playing. He’s an ex-pro who played in the PL with Blackpool, before ending his career with Chesterfield.

What’s Holker Street like for those who haven’t visited before?

It’s not on the same level as Notts County, Fylde or a Halifax but improvements are being made…..Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Where’s best for the Yellow Army to grab pre-match food and drink?

Depending on when you arrive there is a bar next to the ground named ‘The Soccer Bar’ for a few pints, and for food there is a Domino’s close by or an Asda 5 minutes walk from the ground.

Which opposition teams/players have impressed you most?

Jamie Reid who you of course know very well, big attacking the threat who knows how to score, and I’ve kept a close eye since Asa Hall signed for you. Alex Newby has played well this season, in a struggling Chorley side scoring some good goals, hopefully he gets his chance at a bigger club soon enough. Jordan Williams has been a great signing for Fylde, can whip a cross in or a free-kick, he’s also into double figures in his 1st season back in the NL

I’ve kept an eye on Woking this season, after their brilliant start, they dropped off but have rediscovered their form recently and have climbed the table.

Big question, will you win promotion this season?

This season more than ever I truly think we will go up. I’d love us to win it, but I’d take it through the play offs, I just want to see my hometown club back in the FL. It won’t be easy but with the right additions to the squad I think we can go and be a league club for years to come.

And finally, let’s have a prediction of the score for Saturday afternoon?

The score Saturday, with recent form I’m going for a 3-1 win to Barrow. Quigley, Rooney x2, and Reid for Torquay. Safe Journey to you all.

Cheers Nathan
