Match Preview Q&A – Ebbsfleet United by Nathan Holt

“My hope of us staying up seems to be diminishing every game

The opposition interview series continues, with Nathan Holt discussing his struggling team Ebbsfleet United:

Hi Nathan, so summarise Ebbsfleet’s season up to this point?

Well in one word it’s been depressing. Only 5 wins and only 2 wins at home. It’s certainly been a tough one.

Can you still avoid the drop?

My hope of us staying up seems to be diminishing every game. We had a spell under Watson where we beat Chorley, Sutton then got good points against Pools and Chesterfield. So we thought we were going to turn it around. But then the games after that, we got into some great positions and then threw it away. Like missing 2 penalties to draw against Eastleigh or drawing against 10 men Daggers. But, now we got nowhere near Barrow and Harrogate, deservedly getting smashed 7-0 by Barrow and could have been more than two against Harrogate. So, little optimism from me unless we pick up a few results soon.

Any highlights to mention from campaign up to this point?

Josh Payne’s 40 yard screamer against Notts County in the FA Cup 1st round. A world class goal at a time where belief for staying up was still reasonably high.

How’s your recent form been heading into Saturday’s game?

Well, not great to say the least. We lost 7-0 to Barrow and 2-0 to Harrogate. The anomaly of beating King’s Lynn with 10 men was a bit of a surprise. We drew twice against Daggers (games we really should have won) and then lost to Dover. So mixed form.

Who are your key players and why?

Myles Weston is the key man. Has been injured last couple of weeks but he should be back Saturday. He has managed to gain us some points with some moments of magic.

What’s your thoughts on the manger and how does he like to set the team up?

Our manager Kevin Watson who came in in October. His first managerial job, so hardly an easy task. I think he is an okay manger, but just think the quality of players he is working with makes it very hard to get results.

Will you bring many supporters down to Plainmoor?

I’d say about 75-100. A lot of fans have weekend trips booked up. Especially, considering our last away result not too bad of a following.

Which opposition teams and players have impressed you most?

Well Barrow for one look like a solid side. Play a mix of possession and counter attacking football. Comfortably beat us 3-0 at home but I wasn’t there to see the drubbing at Holker street. Also, you guys when you came us to us in October, I thought you could make a push towards the play-offs or the title.

If relegation happens would you be confident of bouncing back?

I don’t feel confident to make a quick return if we go down. So many problems off the pitch as well as on it. The poor recruitment last summer I’d think would only be repeated again. We need another huge rebuild as most supporters think this side could be one of our worst sides in recent times.

What’s your prediction for the game?

I’d go for a 3-1 Torquay. I know Torquay have struggled recently but I think that win at Fylde should swing things. It all depends who scores the first goal really or how long it takes Torquay to get the first goal.
