Match Preview Q&A – AFC Fylde by Craig Wilson

“We have to start scoring goals and being more clinical”

The match preview Q&A series continues, as Craig Wilson discusses ‘The Coasters’ of AFC Fylde:

Hi Craig – so how would you summarise Fylde’s season so far?

It’s been a poor season. Also frustrating. We have played some good stuff at times including your place where we deserved something, however we are in a relegation fight. I would put this down to us being poor in the final third of the pitch. The signings that have come in generally have been poor and inconsistent.

You remain in danger of relegation trouble, are you confident of getting out of it?

In this league we have to start putting some wins together. We have to start scoring goals and being more clinical. It’s a big surprise to be in a relegation fight but we are in it because we have not been good enough this season. Nobody is guaranteed anything in this league but I hope there are four worse teams below us when the season ends.

What’s been the highlights of the season so far?

Highlight has been Sheffield United away. It was a great day for us all. We had a real go at them and the players put on a fantastic performance. The fans had a great day out before during and after the game. The FA cup still has it’s magic.

How’s your recent form been and how was the big cup match V Sheff Utd?

Recent form is okay, we are conceding less but not scoring enough. Goals seem a problem for us this season, Jordan Williams has done really well and looks our best attacking option. Sheffield United have a great ground and for a former pub team to play at a Premier League ground in the cup was fantastic.

Who are your key players and why?

Key players start with Ryan Croasdale in midfield. Our best player and a dominant midfielder. He is everywhere on the pitch and has been our best player this season ahead of Jordan Williams upfront, who has improved as the season has gone on. Alex Whitmore our central defender now looks more established and has done well in the last few months. Sam Hornby is our loan keeper from Bradford who we have until the end of the season, he has done really well  and hopefully we can keep hold of him for next season (as long as we don’t go down).

Danny Rowe has left for Oldham this week, how much will you miss him and will the club be active in the transfer market this month?

He’s been amazing for us. Goals galore and deserves his chance. Based on this season we won’t miss his goals but his all-round play. I will miss his songs as well. The club will be looking for a replacement but we will still have Jordan Williams who has been exceptional up front. I will miss his mum and dad Jackie & Bill as well as his brother will who were popular with us all. As for Danny I wish him all the best.

What’s Mill Farm like for those who haven’t visited before and where will the Yellow Army be placed?

Mill Farm has truly fantastic facilities. Bradley’s bar is probably better than anything the yellow army has seen before. TVs’ everywhere, sky sports and is pretty popular with away fans. Being behind the goal the yellow army are covered from the normal coastal weather and I’m sure you will appreciate our low prices for standing.

Where’s best for pre-match food and drinks?

For pre-match drinks, locally you have ‘The Stanley Arms’ which is close to the train station at Kirkham. Martin and his team will look after you and they serve food and have a selection of fine ales. No doubt a few will stop in Blackpool. One of our fans Ross Lumsden frequents ‘The Man Bar’ near the train station which will be popular. Also Bradley’s which is right next to the away end.

What’s been your best away trips of 2019-20 so far and which opposition teams have impressed you most?

I love away days with ‘The Fylde Elite’. Sheffield United was popular and so are the London trips as we are there for at 9am. Torquay & Yeovil we stopped over which was great. Teams that have impressed me are Solihull & Barrow. Both play a unique way but it gets results. Yeovil were excellent against us and so were Woking up here. It should be interesting in the play-offs. I’m looking forward to seeing Torquay as I thought we were the better team that day and to see if they have improved (yes I know, we lost).

And finally, both teams could really do with a win! What’s your match prediction for Saturday afternoon?

Both teams need a win so I would not be surprised if we had a draw. I’m looking forward to Tom Walker our new signing playing, he has always been fantastic against us when he has played against us, so hopefully he has a good debut. Enjoy your day yellows.

Cheers Craig
