Sam – “This decade has been full of highs and lows for Torquay fans. I have included two significant moments as well as my two favourite albums from each year, plus a track from each to go into the growing TT Playlist”

Torquay 5-0 Rochdale

Despite battling against the drop for most of the season we ended the season in top form. This run was summed up with a 5-0 win over top of the league Rochdale. A goal from Rendell, a brace from Benyon, a Nicky Wroe Penalty and Mustapha Carayol goal completed the rout.

Port Vale 1-2 Torquay

Officially the highest point of the decade. 4 wins from 4 games left us at the top of the League 2. Goals from Nicky Wroe and Chris Zebroski sealed the win.

Tourist History – Two Door Cinema Club

Indie anthem after indie anthem on their fantastic debut album.

Playlist Track – What You Know

Inner Speaker – Tame Impala

The psychedelic debut of album from the Aussie band.

Playlist Track – Alter Ego

Torquay 2-0 Shrewsbury

Despite losing the play off final, this will always be a memorable game. Goals from Chris Zebroski and Eunan O’Kane sent us on our way to Wmbley. The fantastic sense of optimism around the club will never be forgotten.

Torquay 3-1 Plymouth

The new era under Ling produced one of my favourite Torquay moments of all time. Eunan’s chip will live with me forever.

Velociraptor – Kasabian

Kasabian’s 4th album, not their best but still one of my favourites of 2011.

TT Playlist Track – Switchblade Smiles

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Noel’s debut album included some of his best work since Oasis were in their prime.

TT Playlist Track – If I Had A Gun

Torquay 1-1 Crewe

One of the most devastating moments of supporting Torquay (so far). 1-0 up which meant that as it stands we were 2 points into the top 3 with Crawley losing. A 93rd minute equaliser from Nick Powell, which was made even worse by a 94th minute winner being controversially disallowed. Everything could have been so different.

Torquay 4-3 Aldershot

An inconsistent start to this season summed up by this game. At half time, me and my dad were talking about a relegation battles. 45 minutes later and we are in a play-off race again (it wouldn’t last!). This game included super Rene Howe at his best.

An Awesome Wave – Alt J

A fantastic debut album from the experiment 3 piece.

TT Playlist Track – Breezeblocks

Jake Bugg – Jake Bugg

He never quite lived up to his potential but his debut album was full of top tracks such as ‘Lightning Bolt’.

TT Playlist Track – Lightning Bolt

Torquay 3-3 Bristol Rovers

One of the most entertaining games of the decade. A defeat in this game and we would have been relying on other people’s results. We were 1-0 down when Poke’s penalty save galvanised the team. Elliott Benyon’s equaliser produced one of the loudest cheers of the decade at Plainmoor. We drew 3-3 and were safe for another season.

Disastrous start under Knill

The disastrous run after Ling’s health issues was a sign of things to come in 2012-13. Knill’s reign as permanent manager was summed up by our two strikers being signed a week before the start of the season. We were firmly in the bottom 2 by the end of the year.

Snapshot – The Strypes

Four Irish lads who brought rock ‘n’ roll back to the forefront. They were playing on American TV aged 16-17. A fantastic debut album was sadly never followed up. However this album was class.

TT Playlist Track – Blue Collar Jane

AM – Arctic Monkeys

Not my favourite Arctic Monkeys’ album but it had some classics. Many people view this as album of the decade.

TT Playlist Track – R U Mine

Relegation from the Football League

Chris Hargreaves couldn’t save us from the drop and we were back in the National League. The turmoil on and off the pitch was beginning to kick in. To make matters worse, we were lumbered with Knill’s panic buys who were all on ridiculous 2-year deals.

Torquay 2-1 Wrexham

We started the season in great form. This run was summed up by Luke Young’s absolute screamer against Wrexham. For me it is the goal of the decade. If only Jake Hutchings was played over Courtney Richards in CB in the Alferton game then the season could have been very different. Richards was never the same after that game and our season imploded.

Land Of Pleasure – Sticky Fingers

The 2nd album from one of my favourite groups of all time. I highly recommend this band.

TT Playlist Track – If You Go

Royal Blood – Royal Blood

The debut album of the two piece phenomenon.

TT Playlist Track – Figure It Out

Hargreaves is sacked

A long story short. I was at my end of season awards for my final season in youth team football at Kingsteignton Football Club. Dean Edwards presented the evening and took very kindly to me wearing my Torquay shirt. That night I learned through someone else that he was sacking Hargreaves. This meant I knew information which would have shocked our fanbase but was of course sworn to secrecy. I had to resist any temptation to at least hint what was happening to fellow Torquay fans. The news was announced the next day.

Nicho is appointed

The club was saved from going bust in the summer. However a few months later, Paul Cox left after only being paid on expenses and another club legend was appointed. There weren’t many highlights on the pitch this year apart from a 4-1 win against Forest Green on Boxing Day.

Drones – Muse

The Teignmouth lads went back to their rock roots with their 2015 album Drones. I was lucky enough to see their spectacular live show that year.

TT Playlist Track – Psycho

Young Chasers – Circa Waves

A debut album which I had on repeat for that summer. I had just finished GCSEs’ and this album will always take me back to the extended summer holiday.

TT Playlist Track – T-Shirt Weather

Bromley 0-2 Torquay

Great Escape 1 under Nicho was completed with a fantastic win at Bromley. Angus MacDonald’s header and Courtney Richards’ free kick sealed the great escape.

Torquay 4-3 Forest Green

The first of two amazing games between the teams. 3-0 up then 3-3. Then of course Ben Gerring header sealed a fantastic boxing day win. The 5-5 draw on New Years Day wasn’t a bad game either..

Blossoms – Blossoms

The debut album from Stockport’s finest. I saw them support Kasabian for the Leicester City title celebration gig.

TT Playlist Track – Charlemagne

The Ride – Catfish & The Bottlemen

They were probably my most listened to band at the time after their fantastic first albums. However I find it a shame they never progressed musically in my eyes, and I didn’t even finish listening to the third album.

TT Playlist Track – 7

Torquay 2-0 North Ferriby

3 wins in the last 3 games sealed Great Escape 2. Aman Verma and then Myles Anderson’s goals kept Nicho’s team up for the 2nd year in a row.

Torquay 2-4 Boreham Wood

The end of the Nicholson era. 1 point from 4 games led to the sacking of Nicho. If I am honest at the time felt like we needed a change of direction to avoid another season of disappointment. However, it took over a month to appoint Gary Owers and we all know how that ended.

The Amazons – The Amazons

A new wave of rock/punk bands came out in 2017. The Amazons’ debut album included top tracks such as ‘In My Mind’ and ‘Black Magic’.

TT Playlist Track – Black Magic

Dumb Blood – Vant

A throwback to the punk era with a fantastic debut album. Only the main singer/songwriter is left now, which has led to a change of musical direction.

A special shout out to Youth Killed It’s debut album ‘Modern Bolitics’. I genuinely could not choose between the 3 albums, they are all brilliant in their own way.

TT Playlist Track – Peace & Love

Relegated (Again)

We were relegated without a whimper. We signed about 3 players on loan a week and plummeted to the lowest point of our history. An embarrassing start to the following season led to Owers’ departure.

Gary Johnson appointed

I have never been so excited for an appointment in my life. I was always an admirer of Johnson at Bristol City and Yeovil. It was a new era and Johnson immediately turned our season around. The squad Owers left was capable but there was never a clear game-plan. This changed under Johnson as the team went from strength to strength.

Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life – The Wombats

I had them down as a one album wonder before this. They have progressed and matured fantastically musically. This is demonstrated throughout the album.

TT Playlist Track – Turn

A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships – The 1975

Whilst a lot of bands have stagnated, The 1975 caught my eye with this album. The album as a whole was experimental. It made a change in a year full of predictable records. The last track ‘I Always Want To Die Sometimes’ was my track of the year, a real 90’s throwback.

TT Playlist Track – I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)

Woking 3-3 Torquay

Unfortunately I wasn’t at the game but this was just a special moment for all Torquay fans. Ben Wynter’s late equaliser more or less sealed the title. I was on a phone call to my mate who is also a Torquay fan near the end of the game. We both had the commentary on and went absolutely mental when the goal went in.

After about 6 years of disappointment we won the first title in our history. The football league is the overall aim but this was a great moment for Torquay fans. The latest dip in form is obviously a concern, but the good times have continued for Torquay fans. Let’s see what the new decade brings for Torquay United.

Hypersonic Missiles – Sam Fender

The debut album from the latest indie phenomenon. The ‘Geordie Bruce Springsteen’ in my eyes.

TT Playlist Track – Dead Boys

Yours To Keep – Sticky Fingers

The 5 most played songs on my Spotify in 2019 were from Sticky Fingers’ latest album. I also saw them in Brixton this year, a truly amazing gig.

TT Playlist Track – Cool & Calm
