The TT Match Verdict – Weymouth 0-1 #TUFC

This was easily the most ‘pre-season’ game I’ve ever been to. Scrappy, little quality, and a trialist who I have no idea how he managed to get a game. John Paul-Pitman’s second half goal gave United the win. In fairness Weymouth didn’t have much in the second half; the quality of Torquay was evident. In the first half Weymouth played some good football and neither team really looked on top. Former Gulls Josh Wakefield and Josh Carmichael lined up for the Terras’. On a side note, we should be looking at Wakefield again, good player!

Player Ratings/Comments:

Ryan Clarke – 8 – Ryan is exactly what we need, an assured, and experienced number one. Commands the box and assures his back four. He made some good saves and never really looked in doubt.

Ryan Higgins – 7 – Higgins looks to be a great signing, didn’t look too troubled at the back, and had some good runs forward. He was somewhat let down in the second half by substitute Sean Downing. But some good bursts forward made him a threat on the right hand side.

Josh Gowling – 7 – Rarely beaten, experienced head. Josh had moments where he was outpaced but generally read the game well enough to not get beaten. He seems to have adopted the armband, which I can’t disagree with. I just hope he’s still got enough fight after a long career.

Sean McGinty – 7 – Sean was his no nonsense self. Tackles and hoof balls, whilst he wasn’t a standout performer he’s one of those players you wouldn’t want to be without. He helps command the back four and is reasonably reliable, whilst his distribution is questionable; he does everything you want from a centre back in non-league football.

Sam Chaney – 7 – How has this boy adapted to his new position so quickly?! Now I’m probably one of Sam’s biggest critics but once again he did an OK job on the left side of defence. He had moments where he pulled out of tackles which is why he only gets a seven, but on the ball he is competent. It’s a big season for Sam.

Yan Klukowski – 7 – Yan was solid once again, looks to be a good find, always strong off the ball and can make something happen when he does.

Luke Young – 8 – Always looking to create, it’s a miracle he’s stayed. Played some great balls over the top to Gosling.

Jake Gosling – 9 – A cut above the rest, constant problem for the Weymouth full back, played some great crosses, great trickery on the wing. He seems like an ideal replacement for Sparkes, but plays well in the hole as well.

Jamie Reid – 6 – Never really got going, he never made anything happen, didn’t track back enough, and there isn’t enough quality. Often played a bad or wrong pass.

Rory Fallon – 7 – I was very wary when Mr Fallon arrived on trial, but proved he has something on Saturday, despite the lack of pace or skill, he read the game well enough to get into the right spaces and create. Perfect flick on for Pitman’s goal. If we can agree on a pay as you play deal, I’d take him. Adds depth and experience.

Jon-Paul Pitman – 8 – He was a handful for their centre backs, his pace will obviously be his biggest strength going into the new season. Took his goal very well, seemed to link up well with Fallon.

Subs – Osborn, Keating, Harry Bell, Lathrope, Sean Downing, Mitchell, Gray. None of the subs had a huge impact. Downing looks like he’s won a competition to play, I’m sorry to say! Keating and Gray worked well together and both could really have scored.

To conclude, we have a competent starting eleven. Unfortunately we do not have nearly enough depth and I worry that is where we could be found out. Although I have heard we are expecting a loan signing on Monday, so keep an eye out for that.
