DISCUSSON POINTS FROM PLAINMOOR:
1 – Two Steps Back against Sutton Last week I said can we avoid ‘Two Steps Back’ at Plainmoor, the answer was NO! The defensive organisation that we saw at Barrow soon disappeared at the weekend. It’s right to criticise the attackers for not taking advantage of the goalkeeper situation, however we still scored two goals and gave away three soft ones. Lack of marking on the corner, no pressure on crosses and hesitancy from Brendan – and that’s just the short version! Sutton were there for the taking, and we blew it.
2 – Relegation Battle All season the team has won just about enough games to ease relegation fears. Now is the time to worry though, only one point from safety and the teams below us are gathering. Maybe the fear will drive the team on to better things? We’ll soon see as Solihull and Guiseley await this week, and a positive response from the players must come.
3 – Pressure on Nico I’ve always liked Kevin and admired his ambitions for the club, plus his bravery in communicating directly with supporters. The pressure is on now though. The fans are showing frustration at the results, team selection and tactics. We’re never going to be gung-ho in games and the defensive approach (plus choice and timing of subs) is getting their backs up. There also appears to be issues in the dressing room, where Kev is fed up with the boys not following his orders. Plenty of food for thought; he’s still the right man as far as I’m concerned – but things must improve.
4 – Ownership We didn’t go into administration thankfully, but what else has happened since Dave Phillips confirmed the preferred takeover bid? Not much really. Confirming the takeover has taken an age, communications are limited to say the least and we have lost Blissett for a nominal fee that hardly swelled Nico’s coffers did it! Geoff Harrop is here and is being tasked with taking charge, he better get on with it.
5 – Highway to Hele The latest edition of the fanzine has taken a while, but it’ll definitely be worth the wait and will arrive very shortly. I’m assured it will be a great mix of content as usual, plus some bits I did will be in there. So in short BUY IT!
THE WEEK AHEAD
Two winnable games, two games we could lose – no predictions from me after the Sutton game! Four points would be ok and I can see another 0-0 at Solihull (sorry that’s a prediction isn’t it!). I just hope we won’t be trouping out of a wet and windy Plainmoor again this Saturday with glum looks on our faces – I hate it when that happens!
