It’s looking like everyone connected with Torquay United will breathe a big sigh of relief when this month comes to an end tomorrow regardless of the result against visitors Chelmsford.

How to account for a team that was unbeaten in January culminating in the manager, Paul Wotton, being awarded Manager of the Month?

By comparison February has been a nightmare with losses at two grounds where, at the time, the teams were bottom of the table: Chippenham won with a late goal despite United going down the slope in the second half doing everything except score; then Eastbourne, having sacked their manager a few days earlier, ran their hearts out to record a morale boosting win.

The recent unprecedented heavy rain in the south-west, seeing two home fixtures postponed, putting a huge dent not just in momentum on the pitch but as importantly to match day income, has seen the team play six away games from the last seven.

Injuries to key players – Sam Dreyer, now out for a prolonged spell, Jordan Dyer, who may return earlier than first thought, and Jordan Young – are big losses.

To lose what is widely thought to be the best centre-back pairing in the league is a bitter blow. To add to this, Exeter City loanee Ed James has had his loan cut short due to injury too.

It never rains but it…..

Today (Friday) United have announced the arrival of central defender Will Tizzard on loan from Sutton United. Will began his professional career at Southampton (who can forget the impression Nico Lawrence made when on loan from the Southampton Under-21s playing 20 National League games in 2023) and we at TUST are pleased to be transferring our unused financial commitment from Ed James to Will Tizzard.

While at Southampton Tizzard had a loan spell at Chippenham Town in National South before a permanent move to Scottish Championship Queen’s Park with 49 appearances. He’s now at Sutton where this season he has made 18 starts.

It has been a tough few weeks to be a Torquay United fan and hats off to all those in the Yellow Army who have been to Dover, Chippenham, Eastbourne and Worthing spending time and money on travelling.

While United have been dropping points Dorking have taken advantage but, last season and this, any side that has taken over the leadership has gone through a losing spell, we can but hope.

Do I feel that all of us could do with a laugh to cheer us up? I have just the answer – an evening with TalkSport’s own comedian and Torquay United fan Charlie Baker who is hitting the road with his brand-new tour GO GET IT.  He’s bringing it home to the Babbacombe Theatre on May 21st 2027.

Yes, it’s 18 months away – plenty of time to be back in League 2 by then!
And there’s a special code for TUST members only, you can get 10% off tickets with code GOGETIT27.

Tickets went on sale today (Friday) at 11am at https://babbacombe-theatre.com.

United’s Women travelled to Gloucester last Sunday and a Connie Pengelly hat-trick helped them to a vital 3-2 win in the team’s pursuit of the title.

This Sunday they visit – dare I say it – bottom side Bishops Lydeard, let’s hope the women don’t copy the men!

Looking forward to the World Cup in the summer? Well, stand by for changes. For the International Football Association Board (IFAB) are bringing in a raft of changes to speed up play.

For example, five second countdowns for throw-ins and goal-kicks. Taking longer than five seconds will see the throw-in given to the other side and if a goal kick is deliberately delayed a corner will be given.

IFAB is also considering a ten-second limit on substitutions. Teams who exceed this would be barred from bringing on that sub and would be a player short for at least a minute.
At an IFAB meeting tomorrow (Saturday) all these changes are being discussed along with tinkering with how VAR will operate.

February may well have been a really disappointing month to date but if you can get to Plainmoor tomorrow you can be the team’s 12th man in what is going to be another tough test.

Don’t forget that with the Wollens Terrace open for home fans for the rest of the season United fans will be on all four sides of Plainmoor – surely this is worth at least one goal.
And there’s still time for the MARCH4PROMOTION ticket deals –  6 games 4 weeks discounted ticket bundles.
