THREE AWAY WINS ON THE SPIN BUT RAIN STOPS PLAY AS UNITED TEAMS HIT THE TOP
DOUBLES FROM YOUNG AND COOKE ARE SO IMPORTANT
COULD YOU BE THE LOVED ONE ON VALENTINE’S DAY SCOOPING THE 1899 LOTTO?
Those of us with blurred memories due to age recall matches played in the 20th century on pitches filled with surface water when sliding tackles lived up to their name. Of course, in that era health & safety didn’t exist and the word ‘compensation’ was rarely used.
That the top of the table clash with Dorking was called off early this morning was a huge disappointment. Having gone from 2023 without a postponement tomorrow’s blank Saturday follows swiftly after the Farnborough game bit the dust.
With the National League insisting that matches must be re-arranged for the earliest opportunity that is not as straight forward as it seems. It’s looking like Dorking will have to be played in March and even now there must be doubts about Chippenham next Tuesday.
Heaven forbid that teams will be forced to play Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Paul Wotton will be very familiar with this scenario having experienced it when manager of Truro when they were homeless.
For those now wondering how to fill the void there’s always the Six Nations rugby to watch on TV.
Anyway, on to brighter thoughts. This is a great time to be a member of the Yellow Army with both the club’s teams topping their respective leagues.
Tuesday’s seven-hour trip to Kent on a very wet evening might, after twenty minutes, not have seemed a great idea, with the hosts racing into a 2-0 lead, but this current United squad are a resilient group and turned the match on its head. Going in at half-time level was a pretty important psychological advantage.
In the end the three points cemented United’s lead at the top with only Jordan Dyer’s hamstring injury a negative.
Whilst Cody Cooke’s double at Dover was crucial so too were Jordan Young’s brace at Hornchurch.
Young was clearly pleased with his afternoon’s work, taking his season tally to fifteen, as he posted on X, “massive win yesterday, two goals for my girls. Big thank you to the Yellow Army.”
With fans concerned earlier in the season about the team’s poor away form the victory at Dover was the third on the spin following swiftly after what could turn out to be the result of the season, having won on the previous Saturday at the then leaders Hornchurch.
On the following day United’s Women’s 4-0 demolition of Poole Town at Coach Road propelled them to the top of the South West Regional Women’s Football League.
Goals from Matilda Franchi and Mollie Taylor gave the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead with further strikes from Connie Pengelly and a second on the afternoon from Mollie Taylor.
Weather permitting it’s a trip to play Sherborne Ladies on Sunday but do check before travelling.

The National League’s 3UP campaign for a third promotion place into League 2 moves into its second year today (Friday). The National League into League 2 is the only example in elite football where there aren’t at least three promotion places.
The EFL board were due to meet today to discuss the matter and whether to move it on to their March meeting with its 72 clubs.
