Dom discusses the key points
ENFIELD (A)
Maidstone (h) was eventful wasn’t it! Whilst it felt like Torquay should win after the first red card, did they ever truly believe they would? The Stones just know how to deal with us, and let’s be honest we’d rather not face them again in the play-offs! But we move on, onwards to an away day fixture (banana skin) against a struggling Enfield Town team. If you were a neutral glancing at the league table and each team’s squads then a United win would look inevitable, but the Yellow Army know from painful experience that this is no sure-thing. With more inconsistency in the NLS this season and things wide-open at the top, a run of wins would make all the difference.
SUSPENSIONS
With different officiating last Saturday, there would probably have been no red cards at all. The ref lost control and the players lost their tempers, with the eventual result being 2nd half red cards for Louis Dennis and Jordan Young. It does sound like Dennis has a minor injury that means he could do with a rest and he certainly wasn’t at his best against Maidstone…and at least Cody Cooke is ready to step back into the line-up. Jordan Young also had a frustrating game, but losing both of our top scorers does ring the alarm bells for this one. With players like Cooke, Morgan, Jay, Worthington, Everton and Wilson around there’s still enough quality in the squad, so it’s vital to forget about the suspended pair, forget about excuses, and just get the job done.
SONNY BLU
At this testing time of the season you have to lean on the players who are in the best form, and there’s been nobody better in recent weeks than Sonny Blu Lo-Everton. His ability to link up play, work in tight spaces and support team mates is such an asset to this United team. The only criticism would perhaps be that he could score more goals, as he’s getting in good positions, but just not being clinical enough. Torquay have to control the tempo of these away games better, and the axis of Everton/Hayfield/Worthington is capable of doing just that and creating a platform for the attackers.
THE OPPOSITION
Gavin Macpherson’s Enfield Town are firmly in a relegation scrap, sitting 22nd in the National League South with 21 points from 26 games. Their recent form is poor with 2 draws and 4 losses in the last 6 games, therefore the pressure is on Torquay United to take all 3 points in North London! We all know the pitfalls of these type of fixtures, the home team enjoys facing the Gulls and often we struggle to deal with the occasion. A win is expected, anything else leaves the Yellow Army up in arms and questioning Paul Wotton’s position as manager. The season remains on a weekly knife edge, just win lads!
