FOURMIDABLE UNITED LIGHTEN UP PLAINMOOR THANKS TO LD
HAVE YOUR SAY ON TACTICAL GOALKEEPING TIMEOUTS AS LAW MAY CHANGE
LOOK BACK IN TIME TO FA CUP ROUND THREE 100 YEARS AGO
With apologies to Stevie Wonder there were four Master Blaster examples at Plainmoor last Saturday enjoyed by 3,036, including 19 from Hampton, whose manager Alan Dowson described them afterwards as ‘worldies’.
And Man of the Match, as voted for by the day’s match sponsor, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, in his interview in The Cove afterwards praised LD (Louis Dennis) for taking himself, Callum Dolan and Dylan Morgan for a special training session on ….shooting. Boy, did it pay off in spectacular fashion.
Surely all four must compete for Goal of the Month never mind Goal of the Season.
So, which is your favourite? Callum Dolan’s? Lo-Everton’s? Jordan Young’s? Dylan Morgan’s?
Let me know (as an unofficial vote) at fanszone.tu@gmail.com.
In the same match, although of course we were all unaware at the time, Callum Dolan came off with an injury which is likely to keep him out for the remainder of the season.
On social media Dolan said, “Ah man this hurts. From scoring in the first half to the season being over in the 2nd. Some time with the family is needed then I’ll be back to smash rehab and to support the lads in any way I can.”
Tomorrow, United face another stern test with Maidstone (8th) the visitors. Our record against The Stones is woeful with only one win from 18 attempts either home or away. How can this be possible? And only four were draws.
It’s clearly the time to put this right and manager Paul Wotton in his press call on Thursday was in no mood to subscribe to a bogey team or a hoodoo.
It promises to be a mouthwatering tie and one of the matches of the day in National South competing with Worthing (top) taking on Horsham (7th) and Weston-super-Mare (2nd) travelling to Chelmsford (14th). The message is get to Plainmoor tomorrow.
Could Worthing be going through a wobble after losing a nine goal thriller, 4-5 at Salisbury?
United’s Women completed a fine 5-1 home success over AEK Boco last Sunday in pretty wet conditions with goals spread around: Roxy Thomas, Jess Geach, Tee Kaptein, Connie Pengelly and Lily Hilton on the score sheet. The win helps United in their quest for the top spot with a trip to Saltash on Sunday up next.
Non-League Crowd Watch: Macclesfield v Crystal Palace 5,348, Bury FC v Avro 3,739, Torquay v Hampton 3,036, Sutton United v York City 2,414.
What’s your view about the growing trend of the tactical goalkeeper timeout? All teams in every division, including United, are using this as an opportunity to re-group and issue instructions/change of tactics while the keeper receives treatment.
Well, the games’ law makers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) is considering how to deal with this as it’s happening in both men’s and women’s matches.
Unlike outfield players, goalkeepers cannot be forced off the pitch after treatment. There are suggestions about how to combat this. One is to temporarily remove an outfield player after a goalkeeper’s treatment is finished. Since the start of the 2023-24 season outfield players have to stay off the pitch for a minimum of 30 seconds after receiving treatment.
Another suggestion is that players are banned from going to the touchline to speak to managers or that only the captain could be permitted to do so.

Winger Antoine Semenyo’s £62.5m move from Bournemouth to Manchester City, scoring on his debut in the 10-1 FA Cup rout of Exeter City, is another example of a player who plied his trade earlier in his career in non-league having played for Bath City eight years ago on loan from Bristol City.
Talking of the FA Cup, let’s look back at Round 3 played on January 9th 1926, a 100 years ago. The big matches were those involving two amateur teams, Corinthians who took on Manchester City which ended 3-3 – replays were allowed in those days and Clapton who lost at home 2-3 to Swindon. Another result was Tottenham 5 West Ham 0 in front of 50,000.
In the same competition Round 1 played on Saturday November 28th 1925 Torquay 1 Reading 1; Round 1 Replay Wednesday December 2nd 1925 Reading 1 Torquay 1; Round 1 Second Replay Reading 2 Torquay 0.
Those were the days!
