TALKING POINTS

Dom discusses the key points
LOOKING FOR 6
Torquay United are a football club that have often been caught up in runs of form, and often they have been runs of defeats! But we’ve also been able of stringing wins together, and with the Yellow Army feeling down in the dumps, the 5 league wins in a row have come at just the right time. Suddenly everything is clicking and the balance of the team from the front to the back looks spot on. A trip to Chelmsford would have looked treacherous a little while ago after a tiring mid-week fixture, but with players in form and confidence high, the Gulls strode into Essex and took all 3 points back to Devon. Tonbridge Angels come to town this weekend, and Paul Wotton’s United team will have high hopes of making it 6 in a row.
MIDFIELD BALANCE
Losing Matt Worthington was concerning, but Dan Hayfield has stepped back into the midfield and reminded us why he was such an important player last season. Whilst the quietly impressive Sonny-Blu cleverly keeps United ticking with astute passing and movement, Hayfield is a willing runner who will get up and down the park making challenges, winning loose balls and looking to link up with the strikers. All in all it’s a combination that’s working well, and it’ll be interesting to see how PW lines the midfield up when Worthington returns.
ATTACK FIRING
There’s no doubt that Jordan Young and Louis Dennis are two of the best players in the National League South, and they are a constant threat to the opposition as United find attacking fluency and cohesion. Even when we were struggling away from home, Young was always battling trying to make things happen, and his work ethic, allied to his ability on the ball, make him such a hard guy to deal with. A quality player who by my reckoning has been our best performer so far this season.
Not far behind him is Louis Dennis, a guy who is showing on a regular basis why he has played at a higher level for a number of years. Take Louis out of this team and you lose so much. His intelligent movement, versatility and skill makes us tick, and PW will no doubt be desperate to keep him fit through the testing winter months.
KIERAN IMPACT
It didn’t take long for Kieran Wilson to show what he could do last weekend did it?! The quick cut infield and arrowed shot against Chelmsford was brilliant and he also bagged in the week for Exeter City youth team, so he is bang in form. There has been hoards of youth team strikers at Plainmoor over the years and most of them struggle to fit in, but every so often one comes in and makes a big impression. It would be no surprise if he scores again this Saturday.
THE OPPOSITION
Alan Dunne’s Tonbridge Angels team come down to Plainmoor sitting in 17th place in the National League South with 22 points from 20 games, the last fixture being a 1-3 loss at home to Hemel Hempstead. They did beat Hampton before that, but the poor Beavers are on a terrible run of form! Make no mistake this is a team we should beat, especially considering our recent upturn in form. Remain professional, avoid any dreaded complacency and keep this winning run going. Time for some early Christmas cheer at Plainmoor!
