ANDY CARROLL ADDED TO LIST OF FORMER INTERNATIONALS TO GRACE PLAINMOOR
MOUTHWATERING UNITED WOMEN’S FA CUP TIE AHEAD
READ EASY THANK ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THEM ON SATURDAY
It was billed as a ‘double header’ weekend as United, looking to record a sixth successive home win, took on another former Football League club in Dagenham & Redbridge strangely languishing near the foot of the National South table, seemingly a false position.
A 0-0 scoreline is often thought as a ‘bore draw’ but this game, notably in the second half, saw both sides trying to break the deadlock. In fact, late in added time Jordan Young came so close to grabbing all three points.
It’s interesting isn’t it how both managers saw the ninety minutes differently, each talking afterwards that their team had the better chances and should have won. I guess that’s what makes football an addictive sport – full of opinions.
It was, though, a chance for the 3,558 to watch a former England international, Andy Carroll joining a long list of international stars to have graced Plainmoor.
What do these international footballers have in common? Ken Brown, Tony Currie, Chris Waddle, Lee Sharpe, Bruce Rioch, Neville Southall and Rodney Jack.
Yes, they and many others, all played for United.
Older readers of this column will no doubt have their memories of these guys and last Saturday Carroll, who lasted the whole match, gave not only a top striker’s performance but led his team as captain.
If he did anything to upset the crowd it was his fake head injury near the end. Referees are on a hiding to nothing as like it or not, the game has to be stopped in case the head injury is genuine.
Paul Wotton was asked about this in this week’s press call and referred to it as another example of the ‘dark arts’.
If the FA copied the rugby HIA protocol it might then put a stop to what could be termed cheating.

Part two of the ‘double header’ was Sunday’s Women’s league game against Pucklechurch Sports and the girls kept their part of the challenge winning 3-2.
United’s Women are back at Plainmoor on Sunday October 26th for a 2pm kick-off in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, a home tie against Exeter City. This is a match not to miss and could well set up a record attendance.
Earlier in the year the National League launched their 3UP campaign to persuade the EFL clubs to agree to three-up, three-down between League 2 and the National League, since then all went quiet.
Now the National League have announced a 3UP Day of Action for Saturday November 15th, a weekend when there’s another international break.
The idea is that all National League fixtures on that Saturday will kick-off at 3.03pm along with a series of activities to promote the message.
National League chief Jack Pearce said, “The forthcoming day of action will be a great chance for everyone who cares about the national game to get involved and show their support to our clubs and fans.”
FA Cup Crowd Watch: Southend 3,507, Carlisle 3,453, Morecambe 3,066, Rochdale 2,981, Farnham Town 2,300, Scunthorpe 2,261.
Non-League Manager Musical Chairs (2): Last week Eastbourne sacked Matt Gray, this week Aldershot manager Tommy Widdrington stepped down to take over at Eastbourne. Meanwhile Hartlepool boss Simon Grayson lost his job.
Mingling in Saturday’s crowd as over 3,500 fans streamed into Plainmoor, four Read Easy members were collecting donations for the charity which helps adult non-readers in Torbay and South Devon to learn to read.
Their bucket collection, thanks to your support, helped raise £123.32 (£154.15 when Gift Aid added) for their funds.

Tomorrow, it’s another away trip, this time to Chesham and without Cody Cooke who is out for a minimum of six weeks. Support of the Yellow Army will be vital. Safe travels to all.
